I'm one of the guys who's column locked on them while driving this week...twice in the same day, and the same day I bought it...not a good start! Well, the dealership said they ran a test and mine was faulty, not part of the recall. They claim they fixed it, but I've read a post that says they're fix does not work...
Who knows if the dealer fix works?
Incidentally, I never got a colum lock message displayed...the damn thing just stopped working.
They just replaced the faulty part with another one that is exactly the same. It will probably lock again in the future unless you get a CL bypass
This will sound stupid, but just whack the top of the wheel while you turn the key and it will usually unlock. Trust me on this one..I've had three different chevy cars (including my C5) do this and it has worked in every one of them. :yesnod:
If you have an M6,they should have replaced the column lock actuator and the updated relay and harness kit to the BCM (as per the TSB)....If they did not, they didnt fix it :nonod:
I keep reading about this problem over and over. I have an 02 MN6. Does GM know the root cause of the problem? I have seen that it is heat related but have not seen a logical explanation of why. I am trying to figure out if there is some common thread between those that have the problem.
The problem with the column lock is that there are a number of different things that can cause a fault...Heat beating down on the steering column can cause a lazy actuator engagement or disengagement resulting in an incorrect feedback signal to the BCM,or there may simply be a faulty actuator...A slightly discharged battery (vehicles that sit for extended periods) can cause insufficient voltage to the column lock circuit, resulting in a column lock fault...There is also the potential for the BCM to not correctly read the key resistor pellet, resulting in a column lock fault (pull key, wait 10 secs message)...
Since there is really no correction for the above short of completely redisigning the system, you can suspect why the column lock was eliminated for the A4 in 2001,and why it was eliminated on the A4 during the recall...
Since you have to have a column lock on the M6,some "inhanced" circuitry went into production on the 2001 M6 (and those M6's involved in the recall) to help prevent column lock failure,BUT with any electronic component the potential for failure is always there ;) ...I personally have not seen a column lock fault on a 2001-02 (other than those posted on the forum) yet I have seen hundreds (yes hundreds) on the 97-2000...
