I think you may be correct in your theory, but as a total package of mods im sure you would see an improvment, so there lie's that never ending chase for more power :chevy
I kind of remember reading that for 02 LS1's, if you take out the screen, the PCM cannot adjust enough to compensate for the change in air flow. The computer program in the 02's has less of a range for adjustment. Anyone else read that?
...And there is not a one of you who can feel 5 rwhp SOTP's.
I was on a dude ranch in Montana once and I can tell you that after a day of riding, I could really feel just one horsepower in the seat of my pants!!! :D :D :D

Ok, latest and last update for anyone who was following my problems with surging after I took my MAF screen out.
After doing an idle relearn and driving it about 30 or 40 miles, the surging went away. Everything works fine now, though my Blackwing seems to whistle a lot more :)
The problem with this mod on a 2001/2002 is that you cannot undo it easily; going back to the way is was before if you encounter problems). Most destroy the screen when removing it (or mess it up enough to where reinstallation is impossible).
The big question, now...did you get more power...was it worth it? :chevy :seeya
I haven't dyno'd to see if there were any results, but it didn't hurt, so at least my SOTP meter is happy. :)
There is a way to get the MAF screen out with minimal damage, though. I used an Xacto knife, stuck it into the edge, and then wiggled it until the end popped out so I could pull it out. It didn't leave any shards or scraps of metal, but then, I haven't tried putting it back in so YMMV
Pulled mine yesterday.....definitely is breathing easier....the exhaust tone seems to be a little deeper now as well. I trashed the screen pulling it out so hopefully I won't need to put it back
I put mine back in a few days ago, because I got tired of always wondering whether I was getting surging or not. I noticed the most surging when I was close to redline in first gear, but I suspect a lot of people won't notice it enough to bother them.
I would not recommend doing this mod, unless have access to an Autotap or other scan tool to see what it is doing to your A/Fs. If you are running rich already, I would go for it and see how it effects you. Good luck
Wow, this post is getting big. I started with my screen in and getting my LTFT's to near zero. Pulled the screen and cut out the dividers. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I blended the cut areas including blending out the ridge left where the screen was seated, I cannot believe that most people leave that ridge there. Did a 2 hour relearn and found my LTFT's were now lean. Reprogrammed the MAF tables by 8% richer and did another 2 hour relearn. LTFT's are now at near zero again and NO SURGING! I have to believe that adding an 8% increase to the MAF table to get zero trims must add something to the overall power. I think that if you start out rich and do this, it will help; but if you start out lean and do it you may hurt yourself if you don't reprogram. Just my thoughts on the subject.
