Is the item bolted on the left side of rear end housing on a std. C5 called a harmonic balancer? I have a problem with one and am not sure I am using the correct name to describe it. It is two steel donuts rubber mounted and bolt on with an angle iron and two bolts.

I believe it is more of a vibration dampener. I don't know what GM calls it but a parts man should be able to help you.
C5 is a 2000, there are no modifications to it. Std. Small V8, automatic, 53000 miles. Vibration at 850-900 rpms, more prevalent when the A/C is on.
Its highly unlikely that the differential damper is faulty. Deteriorating T-Tube rubber components and the engine harmonic damper are far more troublesome. What makes you think its the problem?
I think these cars just vibrate at idle. I experience it every time I come to a stop. Its annoying, but about the only thing you can do is a tune up and run good spark plugs to settle the engine down.
