With a powerful enough impact, it shouldn't matter. I think a lot of people underestimate the amount of torque needed to break that bolt loose and overestimate the ability of their air tools

i actually had typed this response up, but figured "nah hell with it" and removed it. my dinky Kobalt didnt phase the bolt, so I went and found a $500+ impact at Napa on sale and it spun it off no prob. granted i did heat it as well, maybe the little Kobalt one would have held it's own, but the heavy duty one went right through it.

It's not the amount of torque, it's the amount of rotation. An impact will only try to turn a few degrees at a time, and if that rotation is "used up" by slop then the fastener won't spin no matter how much torque you have. But generally speaking stronger impact wrenches try to rotate farther per strike.
Yeah it was probably a weak Impact, I borrowed it from my neighbor along with his Air compressor and they both looked pretty old and worn out.
its funny cus my Kobalt from Lowes did EVERYTHING just fine, for the last 2-3 years I've had it. I maintain my tools, filter my lines, etc, so my stuff tends to last.
Then we hit this damn crank bolt. It's the first and only bolt that's made me upgrade
