I posted on general, oops. 1997 34k miles automatic. Never changed the tranny fluid. all else has been changed. Mechanic said it was a sealed tranny and not to change it. Thoughts? To change or not to change that is the question.
One day, I will learn the forum. You folks are a great help to a novice.
It is serviceable and I would change the fluid and filter if it were mine. You have to fill it through the side of the pan because that is where the fill plug is. Do some searching on here and you will find a lot of info about it.

Your mechanic is WRONG and YES the fluid and filter can be changed.
The procedure is very exact and if done incorrectly, you WILL damage the trans.
FOLLOW THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURE!!!!!!!!!!! Basically, you have to refill till it runs out of the fill hole, and then start the engine and let the trans warm up and fill it more with the engine running until it starts to run out of the fill hole again. reinstall the fill plug!
IF,,,,,,,, you ever remove the fill plug with the engine off,,,,,,,,,, the fluid will gush out of the fill hole and you will be LOW ever how much gushed out!
Chris thanks for the reply. Talked to a vette mechanic and he said wait for it to turn 50k. If no problems don't mess with it. It seems universal not to do a power flush if no problems. I think I will wait. He also said not to mess with diff until 100k.
Bill I thank you for all your work. I know this much, I will not do it myself. I want someone with experience and know how. I have been told to wait a few miles then do it. At least there is no hurry. No power flush though.
I wouldn't wait any longer than your existing 34k mileage to do a fluid and filter change.
ATF's have improved greatly since the factory fill Dexron III fluid your 1997 has in it now. GM cars and trucks are now factory filled with Dexron VI fluid, which is a synthetic blend, and is supposed to be good for 100k miles or longer in normal use.
Why not take advantage now, of the benefits that the improved synthetic or synthetic blend fluids offer? Waiting until 50k miles, to change your old outdated fluid, doesn't make good sense to me.
