Mixed outer races on diff case bearings - need help!!!
I made a pretty dumb mistake. When I pressed on the bearings on the differential case, I forgot to mark which bearing corresponded to which outer race. The bearings and outer races are the same dimensions, but I'm not sure if it will matter if I mixed them up. I beleive that each bearing and outer race are machined specifically for each other to very tight tolerances and can't be interchanged. Both of the outer races seem to fit exactly the same and feel the same.
Does anyone know if the outer races are interchangeable between the two bearings? They are Timken bearings. This is really going to blow if I have to order new bearings just because I don't know which race goes with which bearing.
did some research on the part numbers and they sell the outer races separately from the inner races, so I would imagine they are interchangeable, but I still want to make sure before I proceed.
Do you have a Micrometer? maybe mic each race and the bearings and see if theres a difference. Measure aech side of bevel and see if one has a higher bevel angle than the other, I would think if they sell a Outer and an Inner Race then they Wouldn't be interchangeable. If both were the same part number then i would think they Would be
Hello just saw your post and your research is correct. I purchase loose bearings and races 10 of eacj at a tine. They arrive in tube one with races. Keeping them as sets becomes important when they have run in contact with other.

Bearings/races and gears all wear into each of their corresponding mating parts. Try this:
Use a magnifying glass and see if you can see any wear marks/ patterns. Maybe you can match the wear patterns to each part.
Give that a try.

These bearings are new, so there aren't any wear marks. If they were used, I definitely wouldn't consider mixing the outer races, but I bet if they were used, this would probably work.
