Default C5 AC issues

My AC stopped working, after making a metallic sound ( clattering sound) . It did NOT throw any codes under 99-HVAC, or any related codes. I've been told it is probably the AC clutch, and it will not throw any codes. Can I replace just the clutch, or do I need a complete compressor & clutch??

my clutch went out as well. you will still need to remove the compressor to put on a new clutch, and it also requires specialized gm tools. If you are going to do all the work of removing the compressor, I would definitely not put a used one back in there.

How many miles on the car? If it's a lot you may want to just put a new compressor on it. You can buy new or rebuilt at most auto parts stores. AND... those stores often rent (basically for free, you buy tool & take it back for refund afterwards) the tools to change clutch if needed. If you don't have one, get a Factory Service Manual... the AC is not that hard to work on... the key is CLEAN, replace O-rings, flush bits from the lines if compressor did fail & replace the orifice tube (little plastic tube w/ a screen) in the line before the drier.
