I'm considering picking up a spare transmission for my 99 FRC. There are several available here local but I don't know the difference in them or which one is the best option. Spirited street driving is all it will see. Good advice "always" appreciated.
I guess my question should have been, which direct replacement transmission should I be looking for? With reliability and performance in mind. The car has the stock 3.42 gears now but will get 3.70's, 3.90's, or 4.11's when the right deal comes along.
if you're re-gearing the diff anyway, stick with the MM6 & use 3.90s. basically the same as the M12 with 3.42s but 5th & 6th are slightly shorter for a little better high-speed acceleration.
I've had great results from RPM in two previous cars-both A4 and also MN6. They stand behind their product and have several levels of performance packages from mild to wild. They also have great customer service which is important when you are going outside the bounds of oem/stock land. Their pricing is fairly competitive and you're getting one of the better brands.
I have a TRANZILLA T60/60 MN12 from Rockland gear. My buddy can build it from any C5 T56 Core and customize it with any gear set. He can do the standard hardened output shaft or the 30 spline if you desire.
I just wanted to know which stock transmission I should pick up should one come available locally. I don't know one from the other. I assume there is a better choice than what came stock in the 99 FRC's?
the FRCs had the same transmission as the manual coupes (MM6 code)
the Z06 got the same trans with a lower-ratio gearset (M12 code)
both had 3.42 rear end
you can, however, use a 3.90 diff with the MM6 trans and have roughly the same gearing as the M12
