They're very close to C6Z performance when it comes to acceleration. Its a driver's race. I dont see it hangin with a ZR1 though

Saturday night I was just cruising along in 6th on the highway at 70, when one came up on me got on my a$$ and then tried passing me, I dropped it into 4th and punched it and blew right by him. He caught back up to me got over in the fast lane and I looked over and saw the "5.0" badge. He gave it 3 honks this time , punched it with the same result and I waved.

My car is an 01 vert(I even had my top down and windows up) with just a tuneup CAI and catback. I think it was an automatic and he had a passenger but it looked like an aerodynamic brick compared to my Vette.

I dont think so....Unless the Stang driver had a stick and didnt downshift......
An automatic 5.0 would totally destroy your car ,under the conditions you've described.....So would a v6 Camry.

Let me get this straight....your mildly modded C5 was able to blow right by a 2011+ 5.0 Mustang....from a 70mph roll....using 4th gear?...

An automatic 5.0 Mustang runs low 13's under 110mph in the 1/4 stock. A late C5 6 speed can do high 12's at 110+. A catback, CAI and some free mods can knock a few tenths off what are you not believing?

But the biggest flaw in your story is the 70 mph roll using 4th gear....which would have you starting at roughly 3000rpm.....which isnt even in your power band.....
Hammering an auto 5.0 Mustang at that speed will put it in its meaty part of the power band....He should have walked you like you were in reverse....
And if he came up on your tail...and hammered it first to pass,you wouldnt have had a chance....even if you downshifted to 3rd....He would have had too much of a jump on you...
I have both cars.....C5 6 spd has catback/ intake....Mustang is stock auto.....Mustang is faster....Period...
Your guy must have had a stick and couldnt drive.....

I wouldn't underestimate the new Mustang 5.0 as serious competition for the Corvette C5; even on the road courses. Performance mods are cheap too.
My 2009 Mustang GT with the smaller 4.6L with cams and bolt-ons was keeping pace with a 2011 Corvette C6 Grand Sport driven by an instructor at VIR.
My Mustang now has a JDM Engineering 5.0L motor based the same 3V platform that puts out similar horsepower/torque as the new 2011+ Mustang 5.0.
Now what do you think the results would have been in this video with 60 more horsepower/torque? Not bad results for a "muscle car" vs. a "sports car".

Don't know if he was full throttle or not when he came up on my tail I'm sure he was after he honked though. His exhaust and downshift didn't seem that loud that's why I figured it was an auto.

Last year in my 99 6 speed Coupe I had with full exhaust tune and CAI, I pulled a 12' 6 speed 5.0 by about a car from 10-50 and then from about 40-70. I saw the guy at a 7-11 later and he said he just bought it and it had 3.73's and a bassani exhaust.
