Is your outside temperature display correct. If it thinks its too cold the compressor won't come on. Did you check the pressure before you tried to add the 134? Usually the can will have enough pressure to start the compressor.

Just checked car reads outside temp of 65 all the time maybe this could be affecting a/c operation

thats the issue....unplug it and clean it if you have some electrical contact cleaner...
also if you unplug it and plug it back in it may not work still...try disconnecting battery for 10 minutes thats how I reset mine
if that doesn't do it you may need a new sensor

Be sure to take a good look at the wires and connecter. Sometimes the problem is corrosion inside the connecter.

the compressor should always come on when you put it on defrost regardless of temperature, because it is used to dehumidify the air.

Have you checked your fuses? As Pewter99 stated, the erroneous outside air temp reading may also be the culprit. Try what he suggested.
Someone recently had a problem with their AC after the engine was detailed. When they disconnected the outside air temp sensor the AC worked.
