WOOOOOO!! Thats the COPPER bearing layer! You have NO BABBIT Bearing material left!

NOT GOOD!

You need a good machine shop to press the old ones out and the news ones in!

So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, what do you think caused that?

How many miles on the engine??

Is that the OEM Cam or an aftermarket?

Have you had any oil pressure issues?

Do you have any crank or rod knock issues???

What made you remove the cam?

Recommendation.. You need to make sure that you install new lifters, lifter buckets, rocker trunnions, make sure that you install a better oil pump. I use a melling high volume oil pump.

What oil pressure did you have prior to the tear down?

Those bearings are worn for a reason. You just need to figure out what that reason is.

If it were me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I would beg borrow or acquire a BORE SCOPE and examine the rest of the cam bearings and see if they are in the same condition OR maybe something happened to the front one.

Its unlikely but,, you never know...

You can easily get your hands on bearings and a installation tool. It is a very simple job to install cam bearings. DON'T replace 1, replace them all. They go in the order that they are stacked in the box. Work your way back to front.....It's a snap with the tool, and a dead blow hammer. Probably cost 30 bucks for bearings.

I agree with you 100%

They ALL need changed. I was just trying to figure out why he has cam bearing wear and if it just pretains to just the front or all of them.

Its worn for a reason and instead of just stuffing in new stuff and hopping for the best, maybe trying to find the reason/smoking gun

My fear is an upper end oiling issue.

Bill

in my experience....low oil pressure....the LS1 flows oil from back of motor to front....pressure may read good at sensor but decreases going forward.....you have an oil pressure issue

Bill,
You are correct, there might be a bigger problem elsewhere. I'd cut the filter to start.

10 years experience in an automotive machine shop tells me that you have an issue there.
bad oil pump?
Blocked oil galley?
bad oil filter check valve?
really dirty oil?
Plugged oil cooler?
Was this motor ever seriously overheated?
Was there fuel in the oil?
Was there water in the oil?

Yes, cam bearings can be replaced easily, but you really need to find out what caused the babbit failure first!!!!
At 50K miles, that bearing should not look like that.
Do your best to track down the original problem first. No use building up something that is already hurt.
I would be interested in seeing pics of the other cam bearings.
If they all look that way, I would pull the motor out to check the rod and main bearings also.
I know that is not what you want to hear, but at this point with the investment in the new parts; it would be cheap insurance to just do it now.

bad oil pump?
oil pressure was good when pulled out no dummy lights ever came on
Blocked oil galley?
I will have machine shop look at it

bad oil filter check valve?
where and how do I check this

really dirty oil?
changed often with royal purple
Plugged oil cooler?
I will check flow with air flow

Was this motor ever seriously overheated?
did over heat when power steering pulley came off
Was there fuel in the oil?
Was there water in the oil?
oil was clean and still purple
