You can find factory reconditioned Passport 8500 X50 units on EBay for about $200. They're sold directly from Escort Radar through EBay. Otherwise, they sell for around $340 new.
I would go the refurb X50 if you are on a budget. It is way better than the $100 Cobra that I was using, and I though the Cobra was pretty good. I do want to get a V1 someday.
I have a Passport and I have been disappointed. It seems like the instant on radar and laser guns that are being used makes it so that by the time you get a warning it is too late.
I use the Passport 9500ix which is firmware upgradeable. I love the GPS feature and the ability to have updatable speedcam and redlight cam locations stored on the detector. It would be a plus to have the bogey directional features similar to the V1 added. I've wondered why Escort Radar hasn't added that feature yet? I think it would outsell the V1 if it did.

I AGREE 100% If you are out front running over the speed limit, all a radar detector (be it $50 or $1000) is good for when the police use laser or instant ON ,,, is to let you know to pull over and get the ticket.
Now,,,,,,,,,, If you have a laser radar scrambler, you have a fighting chance to slow down..

problem with jammers is this
#1 they are only legal on laser. radar jammers are illegal all on their own
#2 if the cop sees you and it appears to him that you are exceeding the speed limit and his radar/laser is unable to get you, at least in this state that's grounds for careless driving.
there's really no effective offense. only defensive plays
of course common sense is probably the best advice. drive a reasonable speed on heavily traveled roads and keep the 100mph+ runs on the track or on an abandon backroad with no one around
That's not entirely true. My Bell detector (don't remember the exact model) has saved me from instant on - when it was used on the guy in front of me. Just don't be the lone speeder or the front runner coming over a hill or around a sharp curve - common sense.
