Hazard Switch Relocation
I have had some intermittent operation of my turn signals and decided to first replace the hazard switch first since I already had the radio out for an iPod installation and had removed the knee bolster to inspect under the dash since I had never been under a C5 dash except looking in the FSM.
I know most turn signal problems are with the hazard internal flasher unit which a Hyperflash will fix but there are still 5 other switch contacts in there that can cause problems like preventing the stop lights from working, rare but it happens.
I decided to leave the old hazard switch in place but reroute the wiring to behind the knee bolster close/below the ignition switch. With that "actual" location of the hazard switch I could replace it very easily if needed. In 50 years I have only used my hazards about 3 times and I think just using the turn signals is about as effective. Where it is now located it can easily be reached with my right hand to activate the hazards if I need to.
In doing this relocation I could not get the hazard connector off inside the dash so I used the radio access point to release the bottom hazard switch "catch". I then just used a big screwdriver in the upper right to drive the switch backward. It was a snap and very easy. I just pulled the hazard switch and wiring down near the carpet to the left side of the center console and removed the old switch. I placed the old switch back in the dash so everything looks normal.
If you do this, you can still install a Hyperflash if you need to since that is exactly the area in which you install the Hyperflash.
Here is a picture of the installation location. Once I replace the knee bolster I will make sure the location is easily accessed. I will be using small ty-wraps to secure it.
