Default Replacement transmission options for Z06

Well 4th gear started to grind this summer, does the same going back into 3rd at times as well. Looking to fix over the winter and want to know my options. I am toying with selling the car as well so cheaper may very well be better as I won't get any money back out of it, but probably easier to sell a car that doesn't grind on the test drive.

1) Can I put a regular C5 non Z06 tranmission in there ?
2) Other GM trans such as Camero, G8... fit without much effort/pain ?
3) C6 Z06 a direct swap (assume it needs rear diff) Anythign else ?

Rebuild options

Complete rebuilds seem to run around $1000-$1500. If its just 4th causing the issue is it significantly cheaper just to replace those parts than rebuild the whole thing ?

Typically what is the labour in time/cost to remove/install a trans ? I see used C5 Z06 trans run $500-$900 at various scrap yards.

What hidden costs come along with replacing the trans ? Besides fresh fluid ? Do you have to replace the clutch etc ? Mine doesn't slip, engages well.

The trans/differential is in the rear of the car and is unique to C5 and C6. NO other non corvette transmissions will work.

As for C6 ZO6 trans,,,,,,,, I believe you will need a bunch of other C6 stuff to make it work and they are usually a LOT more expensive used!

Other STUFF:

Depends how many miles is on the drive train>

Torque Tube isolator (GUBLIO) bushings
Clutch/slave/throw out bearing/ pilot bushing
Differential output shaft seals
Differential to Trans seal O ring

Talk to RKT56 (Rick Kim ) Forum Sponsor who services T-56 and C5/C6 Differentials. He will give you the best price and advice. If you disassemble the trans, at a minimum, you will be into shift fork pad replacements and any damaged Synchro/blocker rings and the gears.

EXCELLENT SERVICE and KNOWLEDGE!

Usually, grinding is the result of damaged parts. It can also be the result of the clutch not fully disengsging when shifting.

I have also seen dirty nasty transmission fluid causing synchro issues and minor grinding. As long as the grinding hasnt been going on for a LONG time, try replacing the tranny fluid and replacing the clutch fluid.

The T56 uses ATF as the fill. Get some quality AMSOIL Torque Drive ATF or you can use Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF as the refill. It may be an inexpensive fix.

That's some good info Bill ! We did swap out the fluid already and it still grinds. I bought the car a year ago (stored it right away till spring) then swapped all fluids for Amsoil. I've put maybe 1000k on it since it started to grind and either skipped 4th or double clutched which also solves the problem. So grinding has been kept to a minimum.

Did not swap the clutch fluid, what should I put in there ? I"ve read about doing the turkey baster method to suck a little out at a time, drive on it, suck more, repeat until clear. Won't hurt to try that one.

I recently had to fix my trans and did lots of research. Here's what it comes down to. You can get anything you want put in depending on how much you want to spend. You can do a complete c6z driveline for about $6000 in parts + labor. You can have the internals of your trans changed to tr6060 internals for around $5000. You can have the internals of your trans swapped to base c5 gears and it is better if you are making a lot of power. I was going to do this but it didn't work out for me due to time and money.

The cheapest thing is going to be have your trans taken apart and find out what all is wrong. You can opt to just fix what is wrong or go for upgrades.

Crazy thing I have the same dang problem with my C5 I agree 1000% with Bill Rick is damn good if you dont have the ability to fix yourself. Now my problem is 2 mortages and need to fix it myself the one thing going for me is I have the tools to do it but like many never done it. I have all dial indicators micrometers height gages and presses just need a road map on how to do it. The other thing my tranny is a level 4 rpm with at least 70k on it as it was done before I owened it the car has 100k on it Motor has 16k TT has 2k, the one thing I dont get is all gears work great but 3-4 grinds on hard shifts but on easy it floats. Amsoil fluid in tranny has 4k on it Diff has 4k on it also. So any input would be great TIA.

You can get the T56 service manual online. Google it or just go to the source http://www.tremec.com and put in T56 into the search and you'll find it.
