For a while now my 6 speed in my 2000 has effectively been a 4 speed, as getting into 3rd or 4th has been impossible without a horrific grinding noise and feel. If I let off the rpm's from 2nd gear I can BABY it into 3rd, then same time to 4th; feeling what I assume are snychros lining up. For commuting this is fine as a 2nd to 5th shift is no problem for the HP I have, however for more spirited driving, like dropping it into 3rd from 4th at highway speeds and punching it (you all know what I'm talking about!) forget it! Bottom line is whats wrong and how much.
I agree that it sounds like the synchros are shot. If your tranny isn't already upgraded, I'd suggest steel shift fork, bronze push pads, etc. Check out RPM transmission Level IV or V to get an idea.
I have a Level V from RPM and am happy with the results.
I'm having the exact same problem with my 02 so I feel your pain dude. I was quoted @ $2,500 to rebuild with a steel shift fork and bronze push pads. That's with them doing all the work.

That's not bad. I have been using Next Level Performance in Orlando for a few years now, and Mike Norris before that. I should give them a call.
So, the way you make it sound, you have been avoiding 3rd and 4th altogether? Sometimes when I try to shift from 3rd or 4th it doesn't want to come out and feels soooo sloppy that I contemplate not returning. Has that happened to you?
