Default ARH 1 7/8 Header Install 2002 Vert

My first C5 header install. Helped a buddy install some LG long tubes on a C6 a couple of weeks ago. That was my first experience with LT header install on C5 or C6. Took the two of us about 5 hours.

Started on mine about 7:30 last night.

Removed coil covers and coil packs from both sides. Removed valve cover from right side.

Removed left side ex manifold. (15.30 lbs)
Removed right side ex manifold. (15.0 lbs)
Removed stock pup cats, cats and aftermarket X pipe. (43.60 lbs)

Installed left side 1 7/8 header from the bottom. (12.20 lbs)
Installed right side 1 7/8 header from the top. I had to loosen the motor mount and raise the engine as far as it would go. (12.20 lbs)

Installed the ARH high flow cats and 3" X pipe. (27.7 lbs).
Also reinstalled all 4 O2 sensors.

Test drive at 2:30 am, top down, 70 degrees outside, love the sound through my previously installed Z06 Ti mufflers.

Total install time 7 hours.
Total weight savings: 21.8 lbs.

The A/C line is very close to the right side header. I don't see how bending it will create more clearance. Anybody have a before and after picture of how they bent the A/C line?

Yeah, I'm a weight freak. Reducing the weight is like adding power.

Just had the car smogged, so I'll deal with it in 2 years.

You might consider DEI aluminiumized heat shroud wrap for the AC lines. It comes in 36" x 1" lengths & uses Velcro. You can find it on Amazon for about $30. I used a couple of them to wrap the AC lines & the O2 sensor wires in my '02 coupe during my Dynatech long tube header install & it seems to work just fine.

Lived in CA and owned lots of different hot rods my whole life. At 50 years old, not my first rodeo with the smog *****.

Definitely a SOTP loss of torque off idle. I'll see if I can get it back with some tuning.
I kind of expected it with an 1 7/8 header. I'm getting ready for the YSI install.

While you need to tune the PCM, might consider a ported Throttle Body.

It wont add a lot of HP but it will make the throttle response a little better. With the proper tune you will see that power and economey come back and may even get a lot better.

I would've expected it too. A tune may help with some of it, but it is up to you if it is worth the $$$ on tuning now and then having to tune again when you do the YSI install.

Enjoy the extra horses.

I'm guessing you've got forged pistons in that motor? YSI is typically for those looking to push past the 750whp mark.

We average 1-1.5 hours installing ARHeaders, but that's with 2 techs and completing 100's of installs.

Good point on the weight savings. that's quite a bit.

Nice work

I'm in the midst of installing a set in my 2001. I installed my passenger header from the bottom and didn't remove the passenger valve cover. I did, however remove my starter because it seemed necessary to get my LG Pros off initially. Getting the starter installed and the wires reconnected was easily the biggest time drain of the task so far (other than waiting for shipping multiple times). My AC line appears to have sufficient clearance.

Removing the battery shroud makes it easier to see what's going on. It only takes about 30 seconds to remove. There is a plastic fastener on the cowl, another on the opposite end on the wheel well and perhaps there was originally a speed nut on a stud at the bottom of it near the middle of the bend.

Cool, good info. I opted not to remove my starter and jack up the motor and remove the valve cover instead.
