Default Lifter noise..

Looking for a little tech help on an 02 Chevy pick up. A freind has an 02 pick up with 170,000 miles and very well maintained. Over the last couple years oil pressure has dropped an lifter noise has gotton worse. The vehicle has been taken care of and driven like an old man would. My question is 1. Did GM have problems like this, if you replace the lifters would you expect them to fail again and what most likely would have caused the failure? Again the vehicle has been maintain very well.

Thx R

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You sort of answered your own question.. OIL PRESSURE DROPPED!

What exactly is the pressure at idle cold, idle hot and normal cruising hot?

Until you find the cause of the oil pressure drop, and resolve that, it most likely going to be tough pin pointing change the filter and the oil, and see if the pressure increases.

You could have a weak oil pump or the oil pump relief valve could be partially stuck open.

Then you have to look at the mileage. 170K inst that bad but it not that low either.

Remember not my vehicle, but I'll do my best. I'm fairly certain pressure is very low at start up, don't recall what number he said but by the GM gauge barley showing. It's been doing it over a year and has slowly gotton worse. Like I said he changes every 3,000 and never romps on it. I pulled up to hid house on day and he had it running outside, not sure how long but he had driven it earlier in the day so it would have been warmed up, sounded then like the pressure was down, engine was very loud.. I'm assuming replacing the lifters might stop the noise but why did they fail? Did GM have issues with pumps? Just trying to help out a friend and not have him through good money after bad.
Thx R

I know of NO known oil pump issues but,, like any mechanical part,, they can and do have issues. Some people have had debris get stuck in the relief valve.

You have to fix the oil pressure issue before you do anything else. The front of the engine has to come off so, its NOT an easy fix.

But at least the rack doesn't have to come off, and the crossmember of the cradle isn't in the way, since it's a truck. I'd swap oil pumps under those circumstances all day long....

I have 63 Chevy pickups at work and we have only had one pickup that started having lifter noise. We buy about 10 new pickups every year, so the fleet turns over and it's not even broke in till after 200,000 miles. I'll stand by the Chevy fleet over any over brand.

Co-worker just went through this with a 2007 6.0 L pickup. Replaced the oil pump after a mechanical gauge confirmed low pressure. We think it spun a bearing. He traded it so it was never confirmed.

its been a problem with these
02 Silverado with 150k ticked since new just louder now. 40lbs oil pressure at idle

Metering problem with the lifters. THere was a bulletin on it when my truck was still new...GM replaced a bunch of lifters only to find the problem still existed so they stopped honoring it. Thats my understanding on it
Doesnt hurt anything just sounds bad. Some days isnt bad others downright embarassing to start it
