I have a 98 A4 with 54,000 miles. I have noticed lately that I have a "high frequency" squealing/whining noise coming from the area in the front of my engine. The noise is most noticable at idle and while driving under 10 MPH. I have replaced the belt tensioner, idler pulley and both drive belts. Has anyone had a bad power steering pump or water pump? If so, what do they sound like when they go bad?
I dont believe its the fuel pump, it sounds more like a bearing going bad. When I listen very closely I cant tell exactly where the noise is coming from! Can someone please explain to me the correct procedure to "ISOLATE" the noise. I really dont want to take it to the dealer!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!
It, of course, could be many things, but have you checked the power steering fluid level? You might have the belt tensioner tested as well. Hope it is easy, quick and cheap to fix. :jester
This is a long shot, but may be worth a try: Get a tooth brush and some alcohol and clean all of the little v's on all of the pulleys associated with the serpentine belt. If the belt is bottoming out in the v-grooves because of a dirt/gunk build up, then it will slip, as it depends on gripping the sides of the grooves for traction.
I have the exact same prob. The dealer replaced the serpentine belt but it didn't help. I still have the annoying high pitched squeak. I think this noise appeared after dealer did the some TSB on alternator. Love to hear some suggestions
