0.01 is 10 mA (milliamps) the multimeter is fused up to 10 Amps and you need to be plugged into the 10 amp fused hole

You need to plug the lead into the 10A socket. If you use the other socket the high current draw before the BCM goes into sleep mode will blow the fuse in the meter (if it's a good one) or blow the meter( if it's a cheap one). If after the BCM sheds all the loads you need better resolution find a better meter.

Connect a jumper parallel before you switch sockets on your meter, then remove it.

YES, this is how you do it. Any other way you will break the circuit and when you reconnect you will wake up the BCM again.
