Engine scrape and low rpms
For over a year I've had an intermittent scraping sound coming from the camshaft area. I've placed it in that area by listening to each part of the engine. It actually hasn't done it for months until last night. It does it at startup, idle, and through gears. This time I'm having an issue when I'm either at idle or when I push the clutch in the RPM's go down to around 500. The scraping sound gets faster or slower as the RPM's do and I can't hear it past 2,000. That may just be because of general road/engine noise though.
As I said, it's intermittent. Sometimes it will do it for a day, or a few days, or a week. All my experience with mechanical issues have told me that once something like this starts it's just going to spiral downward but for some reason it will go away and come back. I've not noticed any performance issues but it is annoying and I can't help but feel it's a bad thing to have happening.
Now I'm not sure if this could be part of what caused the problem or not but last year I had a broken valve spring that I had GM replace for me. I'd have already taken it in for the issue if they didn't want an extreme amount of money just to break the engine down and root around for the issue. I hate not being able to afford to let them have their way with her but that's just the way it is sometimes. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If we can hear it, its easier to trouble shoot.
Does pressing and releasing the CLUTCH change the noise?
Does having the car in gear or out of gear and or out of gear clutch out make a difference?
