So I was playing around on my lunch break and I let her go sideways then grabbed second for a little fishtail, right after that I smelt a funny burning smell. It wasnt rubber and didnt smell good, my car is a 1999 hatch with 126,000 miles with im assuming the original clutch.
Any ideas what the smell could be and if it is the clutch what new clutch should I go with?
clutch smoking doesn't mean it's shot. you can smoke an organic multiple times before they go. if it's slipping during normal driving under power that's different
if you replace your clutch it depends on your hp level and how you want it to drive for your choice of friction material
I didn't see any smoke just a burning smell and it was a different smell. I drove home from work and it shifted great and didn't feel like it was slipping at all.

probably just overheated the clutch. a stock clutch is made of organic friction material just like brake pads you might see on an ecno box.
if it smelled like bringing a civic down from 100mph on stock brakes really fast there's a good reason. it's similar material
it wears material off the clutch yes but it's fairly harmless as long as it's not slipping when you have the pedal out
kind of a grey area depending on how you drive, what tires you're on and how you want it to feel
the stock ls7 clutch with a ram flywheel weighs the same as factory. it's under 600 dollars from scoggin dickey. not a bad choice for a 420-440rwhp car
the monster stage 2 can hold a bit more, should engage faster and has the option of a really light flywheel. however, it's kevlar and by nature a slightly more aggressive engagement than oem
or you could use the lt1 clutch which is the best of both worlds

The Level 2 is a carbon impregnated organic friction. You may be thinking of an old clutch they had with dual friction materials, different on each side of the disk.
400 HP has VASTLY different clutch requirements than 500HP. that's rwhp
Going from 400hp to 500hp has SERIOUS impacts on your bank account.

I ran +500 Fwhp on the OE clutch for quite some time but I'm not a super aggressive street driver driver and I don't take the car to the track. But I did drive the car very "spirited" when it was out and many hard 1-2 shifts at over 6K rpm and the clutch held for a number of years even running a Nitto DR. So it is doable under the right conditions and if you know the limitations of your setup. Anything over ~500 fwhp and you will probably at least want to consider a better clutch to handle that power level. I'm running an RPS twin lite clutch now.

no, actually, i just sold a level 2 a couple months ago. it's full faced kevlar, this is the new design that started in 2013
there's nothing organic about this
the level one is an organic disc with some carbon in the mix
i'm not sure if it's an going joke at monster or what but the picture they have posted online of the level 2 isn't actually the level 2
unless they changed it yet again in the past couple months

Just to clarify, our Level 2 being the most popular of the single discs has changed over the years. It started as a dual friction disc way back in the beginning of 2007, the 11" setup hasn't been used in 3 years, the picture you posted is of a type of Kevlar that we have exhausted the supply on and have gone back to the old Kevlar with grooves cut in it as pictured on the website...both of which have similar characteristics.
