The C5 doesnt have a Cabin Filter. The C6 does. 
Putting a filter on the cowl cover openings will not eliminate the dust dirt smells from enetring the cabin compartment! Here is why:
If you carefully examine your cowl cover (The ends), you will see that it does NOT completely seal that cowl trough area.
The actual place where a filter would need to be placed is the small square opening near the passengers side wiper stem of the cowl trough.
