EBCM Issues/Questions for '99
First, thanks for all the great information contributed by the members of this forum .. Absolutely invaluable.... And my apologies for raising this issue again.. It seems to come around with alarming regularity.
Background:
'99 6 speed with active handling. Owned my baby since she was 1 year old. Only 50K miles and lives a sheltered life in a garage in Florida.
New battery in December 2013. Only mod is a cold air intake.
The problem:
Over the last year, the dreaded service active handling/ABS/... messages started to appear. Codes 1225, 1226, 1227, 1228, 1255, U1040. The errors start within the first few hundred yards of driving. Other interesting symptoms, that I suspect are related to the reduction of various "assist features", are steering getting heavier at slow speed and the clutch also seems to get "shorter".
The strange thing is that after 5-10 mins of driving, if I stop, turn the vehicle off for 10-20 seconds, and then restart, all errors clear and everything works great... I figured this pointed to a wiring or voltage issue.
I've spent hours reading over all the great information in this forum and based on what I learned;
- Inspected/cleaned the hub sensors and connections,
- inspected/cleaned ground connections in engine bay,
- inspected/cleaned connections to EBCM,
- inspected/cleaned battery connections...
Sadly, none of my efforts have improved the situation.... I suspect, I'm looking at replacing the EBCM which of course for a '99 is a challenging and expensive exercise.
The EBCM is Delphi #09356971 V. I have come to understand there are many different "versions" of the EBCM to be found in the early C5s just to add a little extra "fun".
My questions to those who make it through this long story;
1. Any other suggestions of things to try based on your experiences?
2. If I end up replacing the EBCM, is there any flexibly around part numbers or must you match the numbers exactly? (will any module with V code work?)
3. I assume you want to "split" the electronics module from the pump as changing out the entire system (pump and module) would require expert knowledge and tools?
Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated :-)
