Default exhaust help

I have a '98 convertible that came without cats. I have a chance to buy a complete exhaust from a 2002 Z06. Will it bolt up to my exhaust manifolds, or do I need to install the Z06 manifolds.

Im sorry to say,,,, you will need the ZO6 manifolds. They are much different in the outlet location of the manifold.

That being said,, the ZO6 manifolds are worth a few more HP.

NOTE! You will nedd a ZO6 (2001+ ) oil dip stick and tube if you change out manifolds.

Thank you Bill. The exhaust system comes with the manifolds and everything looks brand new. How big of a job is it to change out the manifolds?

Believe it or not,, its not all that difficult.. Get the car off the ground (I used jack stands)

Use the standard GM gaskets. The bolts should come out easy and are reuseable.

The ONLY questionable area are the manifold to midpipe bolts. Some times they are frozen and snap.

Do you have the C5 ZO6 Ti Mufflers???????

Oh... The exhaust manifold to block bolts are torqued to 18 ft/lbs

Change your plugs and wires. I use the GM Performance RED wires. Cant beat the quality and price. The Stock GM Irridium plugs are also excellent. If you have heada and cam, there are other choices.

Dont forget,,,,,,,, You will need a NEW C5 late modle dip stick and tube!!!!!!

You will have to MODIFY the passengers side A.I.R. air tube to fit in a modified location. I cut the metal tube and used a piece of high temp silicone hose to reconnect.

Thanks Bill. I installed new plugs and wires from Gene before going to the NCM 20th. I had a new Corsa x pipe and mufflers installed while at the NCM. PO had removed cats and I was hoping to bolt this system on and modifying it for the Corsa's. Not sure if it would be worth the work to swap out manifolds. May have an exhaust shop swap out cats to old pipe. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

WELLLLLLLL,,,,,,,, The CATs are welded on the midpipe and althought is not impossible to do,, any good shop can weld in anything. You have to know that its illegal for a liscensed shop to weld in old used CATS into a system. Just saying.

That being said,,,,,,,, A mid pipe that will fit is a midpipe that will fit. If the CATs are good on the ZO6 midpipe,, it should fit what ever you have now. The shop SHOULD be able to fit your muffler setup (axel back system) to a stock midpipe.

Stock C5 midpipe (applies to ALL C5s) Note,, early midpipes DO NOT have PUP CATS, 2001 ZO6s had PUP CATS, 2002+ ZO6s did not. What is the year and MOD of your midpipe

The midpipe shown is a 2004 Coupe midpipe (with PUP CATS)

The car has the stock mid pipe with cats removed and pipes welded in. I was hoping a good welder could cut the mid pipe in front of the cats and weld in the same piece from the stock pipe to bolt up to the stock manifolds. I bought the 2002 Z06 mid pipe and manifolds for $200. They appear to have been removed for headers not too long after car was new. I want to put stock cats on without buying the whole GM set up for over $2000. I am starting to think that installing the Z06 manifolds and being able to bolt the mid pipe in might be the way to go. Winter is coming and I will have some time to kill in the man cave.

swapping mainfolds from base to Z06 is easy. just get new plugs and wires as stated above as one of them will likely brake off. I believe the AIR injection might not bolt directly up, the early ones iirc have different pipes leading to them. you can get the newer style pipes or find some used and swap them or modify what you have to fit and it should work just fine. Someone correct me if im wrong but i for some reason am remembering the AIR pipes are a little different.

I am going to order up new wires just in case I ruin any taking them off, might just replace them all to be sure. New manifold gaskets and the Z06 dipstick tube and dipstick too. Plan to splice air line.
