I've checked the voltage on pin B of the alternator plug and I get a reading of 10 volts. The manual seems to say that this pin should have 5 volts to trigger the alternator to charge. If that is correct then for some reason I seem to have double the required/correct voltage.
I'm really stumped now!!
I took the time to go ahead and check all the wires at the starter solenoid as well. The nut was on good and tight and everything looked pretty clean. Cleaned all the surfaces as good as I could, smeared a little dielectric grease on everything and put it all back together.

In an effort to avoid going to the dealership I took the car to the Tires Plus near my house. On the rare occasion that I need others to fix something on my car this is usually the first place I try. The GM Tech was willing to listen to me explain everything that I had done and he quickly said that it seemed obvious to him that my original alternator and the Auto Zone alternator were both bad and that was my only problem. Left the car with them in the morning, they ordered an alternator from CarQuest, which they guaranteed would be the correct one for my car. They received the alternator at about 3 PM and at a little before 4 PM they called and said the car was ready to go. It's been about 5 days now and everything seems to be just as it should be. These cars are truly sensitive to alternator compatibility. Hopefully my experience may help others.
Thanks for all the help that I got in this thread and via PM, especially from Bill Curlee and Evil Twin!! Great resources all around.

Thanks for the info and the PM on this. I'll definitely look into that alternator as the duralast one doesn't seem to cut it.
