purchased an automatic 2004 C5 corvette coupe about 8 months ago. today I am having problems with the shifting, it is not the transmission itself, I believe is the shifting cable bushing . need help or advice.
Welcome !
I am not familiar with the Automatic.
Until someone can offer more help try searching
Shift Cable in this forum or in the General forum maybe you might get some ideas
about what might be the problem
I just replace the shift cable in my 99 A4 coupe a few months back. It was not to bad. I got the cable off Amazon, I think it was under $50. I removed my shifter, bad idea, if you move it very far it breaks the plastic end on the cable, and I mean like more than 1/4". I put it back on with the shifter in place. If I had to do it over I wouldn't take the shifter out. You have to drop the H or X pipe and remove the tunnel plate. While you're there, with the exhaust out, I would change the fuel filter too. It's just much easier on an auto with the exhaust out of the way. The cable is pretty easy to swap. As I recall there was something about one end of the cable, that you don't want to mess with it until your ready to install. I can't quite remember exactly what or why. I think I wrote it up in here when I did it. You might search for that post. If you want to talk just PM me with your number.
I found the post.
Okay, I finished putting it all back together today. Did some other maintenance while it was down too. Replacing the shift cable was pretty easy. There is no need to remove the shifter from the console, it can all be done from under the car, and easier. Car must be far enough off the ground to remove the X or H pipe, as the case may be. Then the tunnel plate must be removed. That is the most labor intensive part. Pop the cable off the ball connector at the shifter with a flat blade screwdriver. There is what looks like a large metal staple that locks the cable to the cable mount. Using the screwdriver, gently pry the metal clip out then, using needlenose pliers, remove the clip. There are two tabs on the large side of the cable that goes through the mount. Depress the tabs and push the cable back through the mount. I ended up using the screwdriver to depress the tabs, one at a time as I couldn't get the pliers on it. The transmission side it is basically the same, except the mount is held in place with two nuts. Again, remove cable end from the ball connector by prying it off the ball. I found it easier to remove the mount first, take the old cable out of it and put the new cable in then, put the mount back in place. This would be much easier with a lift and a helper at least for removing and installing the exhaust. I would recommend changing the fuel filter while you're there ($30 on Amazon). Also, be sure your shifter and transmission are in the same gear.
