Corvette_Ed and IH8FORD,
Thanks, the first thing I did was tighten the cap, but did not look to see if it's cracked.
Sounds like great advice.
Thanks,
Mike
Is the 442 current or history? If current the best case scenario is stated above. If the seal is cracked or squished, replace it and clear the code. Drive it and recheck for codes after about 100 miles, include some steady interstate cruising. If it's not set stop at your local parts store and have them check the obdII monitors. If the evap has run and passed your good. They can take a while to complete.
The other way to check is to use a scanner that you can check dtc status. Punch in p0442 and see if it passed.
If it's not the cap, you can PM me. I'm very familiar with evap problems
I got this code and was smelling fuel while driving. Turned out that there was a line unhooked under the drivers side fuel rail cover. If you're smelling fuel at all it's worth checking.

Marty,
Thanks the code reads P0442 H C so I think that means current. The cap and seal look good with no cracks, but a 13 year old seal might just be squished as you said.
I'll go visit Chevy for a new cap and try it out. Thanks for the ideas!
Mike
p.s. dbgoodwin, No smell of gasoline at all, but thanks for that suggestion. I got under the car too and no signs of leaks there either.

you might also check the lines at the firewall and driver side of the intake that go to the evap solenoid... make sure they didn't pop off and you can also remove them, plug one end with your finger, and blow in the other end, if there are any holes in the line you should he able to tell

neutron82,
Thanks I'll check before going to the dealer for the cap.
It was the gas cap. It looked great but must have had too many years on the seal. Went to Chevrolet bought a new cap for under $25. Put the cap on and cleared the codes as suggested above, it'a all good now.

Thanks again!

Thanks for coming back and posting the fix. This will help someone else in the future.

You won't know for a while if it's fixed, the evap system doesn't run all the time! Typically the evap system runs at 1/2 tank or so to pull the fumes out of the tank. Run the tank low and see it it returns. The cheap actron scanners will tell you if/when the EVAP I/M monitor ran.

Thanks for the heads-up!
The check engine light and code started during some heal/toe downshifts with minimal fuel in the tank. Right before putting the new gas cap on, I put 14.9+ gallons in the tank. So I'll see if it returns when the gauge reads low again.

If it does many shops now have diagnostic scanners that can actuate every part of the EVAP system. They are a step above using smoke through the EVAP port to check for leaks. Only a big deal if you live in an emissions testing part of the country.

Thanks, good information in case the code comes back!
