ok never posted on this forum before. hope someone can point me in the right direction. Have a 2004 C5 coupe with 80k miles on it. i enjoy using it and was commenting on how reliable it was over all these year. so hit a bump where road work was going on. Nothing happened immediately but when i got in the next morning to drive the dash and hud were dead. no lights nothing. then i hit the bump again on the way out and everything came alive. next time i got in to start it dead again. my mechanic is talking about taking the dash apart or maybe a new dash... sounds like a loose connection to me. thoughts?
Listen to Bill he knows his stuff. From what you described I agree with your initial thought, A connection issue. If it was "fried" it never would have came back up. Sounds like a connection/ground issue. Best of luck, please let us know what you find out.
thanks everyone. i will check and get back to you guys soon. Snow on the ground. hopefully it will melt away and give me a chance to get back at it after the holiday weekend is over.
took it to my mechanic. the dash was dead along the way. he checked the fuses, the grounds and the ignition, dont think he took apart G104. He says no rust was present. he says he suggests i take it to a dealer for a diagnosis. on the way home i noticed that the idiot lights for seatbelt and emergency brakes were working. the HUD is showing two blue dashes so it is getting power, but no data.
any thoughts?

I've had issues on these with the connectors at the Instrument Cluster itself. I'd pull it out and check/clean the connectors or have your mechanic do it.

EXACT same thing I was thinking!
GM female pins SUCK and one could be compromised/spread apart.
You really should do a PIN PULL TEST on the female pins to make sure that the female pin has the correct tension on the male pins.
