Default Quick question before i change head gasket

Reading through Junkmans guide, it appears I don't need to drain coolant in order to pull the heads. Just wanted to verify that this is correct

You don't *NEED* to.....but it will be a LOT less messy.

I would do it... first time I pulled my waterpump I drained the radiator first and it made a mess so the second time I said screw it I'll just pull the pump straight off cause it will make a mess regardless... it made a huge mess and never seemed to stop leaking out lol

Before you hose your block,,, You do realize that you MUST clean ALL the water/coolant/moisture/dirt out of EACH of the block head bolt holes. If you have any moisture inside any of the BLIND BOLT HOLES, you can and usually do "RUPTURE THE BLOCK"

SUCK/BLOW and recheck until you are POSITIVE that each hole is clean and dry! I use a LONG Q Tip and if the Q Tip comes out dry and clean, ALL IS GOOD!

You MUST use NEW GM Head Bolts each time.

I always strongly recommend using ARP Head Studs.

Why did you pull the heads?????????

Thanks Bill!

All holes are nice and clean, just finished actually.

Blown head gasket on the passengers side. It actually wasn't too bad of a job. I've never removed a head and it only took about 2 hours to pull the head and clean things up, now taking a break before I re install.

I've been following Junkmans DIY from LS1 Tech. Not sure if he is a member of Corvette Forum but a big thanks goes out to him for the detail he put into the write up, which in turn has made everything a breeze
