Hi everyone,
As I continue to learn about my car, I am needing some advise on how to tell if the sound system is a Bose or just another radio. The speakers say Bose but the cassette unit does not. If the unit is a Bose will it always say Bose on it, or could it be a Bose and not say it on the radio face. Last, If I want to make a Bose system, do I just need the radio or and extra amp component? If I buy a Bose CD unit, is it just plug and play or will I need additional hardware and components?
Thanks

If it's a factory unit then you have the Bose system. I believe all C5's had Bose speakers. The head unit won't say Bose and I'm not sure if the head unit is even made by Bose it may just be an AC Delco unit. My factory CD player does not. I would not waste your money on buying anything Bose. For the same price as a Bose system you could get something much better... or if you spend a fraction of the price you could get something that is just as good, if not better. Bose is way overrated and not anywhere near as good as the price commands. Just trying to give some helpful advise.

What this guy said, all of it. The factory head unit is probably an AC Delco, there is no such thing as a C5 Bose head unit that I am aware of. So if you're trying to get the best C5 stereo that was offered, pretty darn sure you have it. A Bose system from the dealer meant Bose speakers. If you're trying to get a better stereo, there are better options than Bose.
That said, my solution is to never turn on the stereo and listen to 346CI of LS6 motor with headers thru glorious Ti mufflers... ahh, sounds gooooood.
I am "sure" Delphi made the radio, I do not believe it was AC Delco. Not at home to verify. Bose did the signal processor, subwoofer amps, and the speakers. Pioneer did the remote CD changer.
My 2001 had a cassette radio. I just swapped in a CD radio and added an iPod adapter while I was at it.

Mr. Sam
My CDP head unit shows "Delco Electronics". Does Delphi make Delco Electronics? Maybe.
What a great group, lots of helpful info and I greatly appreciate it. Mr Sam, can you drop me a step by step on installing and I-pod on these radios. I am going to install a factory CD unit in place of the cassette. Been trying to keep it somewhat original but since I have a great collection of CDs I would like to be able to play them.
On question, is the connector(s) the same on all units, cassette or CD?
Again, THANKS for the tip and advise!!

Check out Dennis at Double D Mods. He's a vendor who sells the adapters. It's pretty simple to install. All you do is pull the radio, plug it in the back, route your wires, and you're done. There's some really good write ups floating around as far as how to take apart the interior. I can do mine in 5-10 minutes now.
The Bose system with the CD's sounds pretty good... if, you'll upgrade your speakers to almost any aftermarkets it will sound MUCH better... Dennis at Double D mods sells some upgrade kits... they are plug and play....I did the Kickers because I live close to the factory and like supporting them.... but, I would have gone with the Alpine if it hadn't been for my loyalty to Kicker.
Also like Sam said, the Ipod adapter and the Bluetooth receiver are also VERY nice upgrades....still looks stock if you do it right...here are pics of mine installed..
I just leave the Bluetooth receiver in the console... it plays great... Pandora, My song list, Ipod, or whatever it's awesome!
On the Double D mods - what is the key word search for this simple plug in in the back of the radio component? Went to the site and there is a lot to pick from...
Thanks

It may be this one but I don't know. Your best bet is to contact them directly and see if this will work. If not they may be able to point you to the correct one.

When we talk about the seat issues I will explain everything you need to know about the iPod adapter.
