1998 Key Fob looses synch

Take a good look at your main 12 vdc battery.. IF,,,, it is weak and allows the output to drop too low durring cranking,,, It will cause all sorts of stuff to reset. Do you often see other things reset to base settings??
Like Memory settings, HUD Page ect. Just have your 12 vdc battery tested and see if it has proper CCA and Reserve capacity...
I had the EXACT same thing happen to my 98 coupe.. The battery would crank and start the engine fine BUT the output voltage would drop WAY to low during cranking and cause modules to shut down during the period of low voltage.

If you're handy with a soldering iron you can repair yours or, buy a new FOB. The early FOBs are, unfortunately, MUCH more expensive to replace than the later cars.
Personally I would recommend changing your system to the 2001 to 2004 system. They are MUCH more reliable (including better range) and, if needed, a replacement FOB will only cost about half to a third the cost of the early FOBs. I made the change over several years ago and really like it.
Gene at Cultrag has a retrofit kit that gives you all the pieces necessary to do a changeover. Give him a call.

Perhaps worth a try before spending more than $400 to upgrade to the 01-04 setup. Not knocking the upgrade path but it is a tad expensive....
Thanks, this is the post I wanted, I remember seeing it.
I replaced my fob battery, car battery is fine, no other problems.
I tried fixing the solder joints, but mine still didn't work right. In addition to losing synch, I could re synch it and just a few seconds later while it was still, it would lock or unlock the doors.
I did the '01-'04 upgrade a few years ago, and still working fine.
Good luck.
