Default The Dreaded Dead Speedo...

Hey Everyone!

So, I recently had my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate (as well as the respective cylinders) replaced on my '99 Hardtop, and I've run into a bit of an issue. I have literally no speedometer. The Tach works fine, as well as every other gauge, and the needle for speed flares up like it normally does, but it won't give me a reading. Hitting cruise control will give me some idea of how fast I'm going, but it quickly disengages itself.

I'm thinking that based off of the codes (PCM P0500), and how often the shop had to move around the tranny (the original master cylinder I bought didn't fit, so they tried the old one to no avail), the VSS is either damaged or dirty.

The shop in question offered to take a look at it for free since they think they caused it, but in the mean time, is there anything I can do to fix it? I don't have a jack, so I can't quite get to the Diff, but I keep hoping for some miracle fix that doesn't require me to leave my baby at the shop for another 2 weeks.

Thanks guys!

Not really a fix for the problem, but can you just use your HUD (maybe your car doesn't have one). Not trying to be a jerk, but sometimes the obvious solution doesn't always present itself when working on a problem.

I would guess that the shop forgot to connect the connection to the VSS. It is easy to check as it is at the top rear of the differential. Have the shop take care of it for you.

I agree. That was my first thought, not connected. Since the speedometer sweeps on startup it is probably OK. The VSS has no function in that initial sweep at startup.

If you don't want to wait for that shop you can go to anyone with a lift and for almost no money that can make sure it's connected.

C5 Rear,, VSS sensor on the passengers side:

Just make sure that it properly connected to the sensor and the wires/connector is not damaged.

Unfortunately, I don't have a HUD. I've been using my phone for now to get some idea of how fast I'm going. And no jerkiness taken at all man, thanks for the input

That's what I was thinking, but when I came back after a few minutes, they jacked my car up and fiddled with it (cleaned and unplugged, battery removed), nothing came back. I will have them take a better look at it though. Thank you sir!

Yeah, everything points to a broken connection (Unplugged or not), so I'll try screwing with the contact point. I don't mind going back to the shop, I just don't want to have to wait anymore.

Thank you Mr. Sam!

Ahh, so that's where it is. Okay, I'll take a look at it, thanks Bill!

Thanks you guys so much for the quick responses!

If your instantaneous MPG readout on the DIC is working then the VSS is still connected. If it is not, then you have your problem found.

I think you're right. MPG is totally gone. I'm going to do one last test before I have it up on jacks, I've got HP Tuners' software on a laptop, so I'll check and see if I can get any reading at all to double check that it's not something else.

More than likely, however, it is just the VSS

Thanks a bunch!

Update: It's definitely the VSS. Checked the voltage output with a multimeter, got nothing. New VSS for me!

Thanks everyone for the help!

Issue resolved. T'was the VSS for sure. I had all sorts of codes until the sensor was replaced, and once it was slapped on there, got an accurate speed and no more codes.

Updating for later google lurkers with similar issues

Thanks again guys!
