So its just adding a copper washer to the detent plug?
There's a reason for this, that wasn't mentioned. The washer spaces the plug out a little further, so the detent loses some of it's force, since the plug isn't pushing on it as hard.
Yeah, if you aren't sure of the content of the gear box, and differential, for that matter, a fluid change certainly wouldn't hurt. Everybody has their preferences, mine is Red Line, in the 'Vette, but I've also used Amsoil in my truck...
One other thing you could do, is change the springs to a different set....
