Default Need help adjusting shifter

Hey guys I have a 99 coupe m6 and Im having trouble getting it into 1st and reverse. I Googled and watched a video by froggy I believe and it looked pretty easy. I just got in here and noticed I do t have that pin you are suppose to push down before tightening the torx bolts. The car has an aftermarket shifter that the previous owner put in, I'm not sure what brand. Do I need to put something in there like a small screwdriver or what steps should I take? I'll upload some pictures as soon as I can. Thanks

I have a Hurst, but it's gold anodized, however your shifter does somewhat resemble mine. Nonetheless, if you don't have the pin, an Allen wrench, of the proper diameter, will suffice. So would a drill bit, but with the bit, you'd just have to be careful not to let it drop down into the tranny tunnel.

I had better luck just adjusting it until the holes lined up. Bump it back and forth between gears and side to side and see where it returns and keep tweaking it until it's as good as you can get it.

Can I take the shifter apart at all to clean? I noticed one of the torx bolts is loose on the bottom right. Can I take those 4 bolts apart right now and clean inside or do I need to put the pin/Allen wrench in the whole before taking anything apart? I just don't want to screw anything up...

You can take it off and not screw anything up.

But be careful, as there should be a gasket between the shifter and the shifter box, that's somewhat fragile. I really don't know why it's there, as there's nothing really inside the shifter box that needs to be sealed, but nonetheless, it's there.....

What about taking that black plate off? You can see in the 4th pic the bottom left torx bolt is backed out a few turns. It was like that when I took the bezel off. Can I loosen those 4 torx bolts and lift the black plate off? There are also 2 big Allen screws on top, what do those adjust? Do I just leave them alone?

The torx head screws hold the shifter assembly together.

The socket head screws next to the shift lever, hold springs in place, the springs adjust the tension on the shift lever. In other words, they adjust how "stiff" the shift action is. There were 3 sets of springs that came with the shifter. I installed the Hurst in my car in '02, so my recollection isn't 100% about which springs I wound up using.

The socket head screws with the jam nuts, are "stops" that prevent damage to the transmission, by the lever travelling too far when you're shifting "vigorously". The screw at the rear of the shifter is the stop for the 2nd, 4th and 6th gear position, and the front screw is for the 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear position.

If you "PM" me an e-mail address, I can try to scan the instruction sheet, and send it to you....

Thanks I'll send you a PM right now...

I wonder if I just need to adjust the spring tension to get the smooth shift back?

My computer skills aren't the best, but I scanned the instructions, 3 pages, and sent them to you in 3 e-mails. Hopefully, they are readable. If not, get back to me, and I'll try something else...

I'm having trouble reading them, I only see 2 emails as well? It looks like at the bottom right of page 2 it talks about spring adjustment?

I took mine out and took it apart to clean and regrease it and noticed that one of the small springs inside the big spring is broke. Any idea if I can order these or just run to a hardware store?

I would contact Hurst. I'm sure the springs have a specific rate. I'll try sending the instructions again.

EDIT....I re-scanned the instructions and re-sent them.
