I have 1998 C5 auto trans.. Driving with cruise on 65 mph the engine quit. No shuttering like a fuel issue, it just quit. coasted to a stop, put it in park and it started right up, no problems again. I have 125,000 miles. Any ideas, should I be worried? Thanks, Ernie h.
As already suggested, pull the codes. Have you noticed any drivability issues in the recent past like slower than usual acceleration? Did you fuel up shortly before this happened? I ask because you have 125k miles on the car. Maybe your fuel filter is getting plugged. When was it last changed?
Just a safety observation / comment. You state you were going 65MPH and coasted to a stop, then put car in park to restart. You can restart a car in neutral thereby eliminating the need to stop. Stopping puts you at greater risk of getting hit even if you're "safely" on the shoulder of the road.
Unless you read the DTCs "IMMEDIATELY" after the engine dies "WITHOUT TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF!!!!!!!!!" the issue that caused the problem may not be recorded.
I SERIOUSLY recommend, examining and listing the DTCS that you have now. Record those and post up what you have. CLEAR THE DTCs after you have written them down.
The NEXT time you have the car die on you, clear and MESSAGES in the DIC by pressing RESET until you have a normal DIC screen. Then go directly into reading the DTCs in MANUAL MODE and list EVERYTHING that is listed in the DTC list.
That info will allow us to point you in the correct troubleshooting and repair direction.
Otherwise, BREAK OUT THE WALLET AND START REPLACING STUFF!!!

PS,,,
You are the SECOND person this month that has had the " CAR JUST DIES" issue!
Thanks for the answer. It isn't fuel, I can guarantee that. It's ignition. The filter is less than 3 months old, I only use Shell premium with a very good additive. And thank you for your concern. They reason I coasted to a stop was so that I could end up safe, not knowing if it would restart in neutral or not. Ernie H
