hi guys i was driving the highway last night and then suddenly i was in neutral and i cant shift into any gear even with clutch in. Then i pull to the side and turn off my car, cant even shift into any gear with the car off. End up having the car towed back, anyone know whats the problem?
Guessing 73corvette's latter note is right. Disconnected linkage perhaps?
You can see the star bit bolt that connects the shifter rod to the rod that goes to the tranmission at the back of the lower box... YOURS might be completely loose... which would NOT let you shift... because it's just rotating on the shaft.

i would take it to the hobby shop on base if i can but my car ain't moving so i'm going to borrow my friends tool box and i think that's the case aswell, i probably didn't tighten it enough last week replacing the shifter. will update after and thanks alot for the quick replies.
Is it possible it's a clutch issue? Would a failed master or slave cylinder prevent it from going in gear?
Even if the clutch is FUSED to the flywheel or the disk is burnt to a crisp, when the engine is OFF, the shifter should be able to shift the gears inside the trans..
I has to be a damaged shifter, damaged lower box, shift rod issue OR something serious wrong with the trans internals.
All you can do is start disassembly and touch each part until you spot an issue... Remove the console, closeout cover and have at it...
ok i fixed it, it was the pin that prevent your shifter from going into gear, i forgot to remove it completely during the installation, it just fell in place that night and locked the shifter.
That is an alignment pin, to insure that the shifter is in the neutral position when installing the shifter... you can remove the pin after you have installed/adjusted your shifter so that can't happen...
Glad you found it and got it fixed
