I have a new to me '01 vert 350hp, 6 speed manaul, with a high pitch whistling noise coming from what seems to be the front of the engine. It follows the RPM up and down and can't be heard when driving. I haven't had the car long enough to know if it is just normal engine noise or...? It isn't loud or bad enough to sense that something is about to fail, but it is annoying.
Have you lifted the hood and tried to find the general area where it is? If the car drives fine and does not thru codes or CEL light it probably is not a vacuum leak.
It has no codes and with the hood open it sounds like it's coming from the front of the motor as if it is something mechanical/external to the engine. It's a 21,000 mile car and I have only put 200 miles on it since getting it in early September. It may be "normal" for this car and I suspect it has been there since before delivery as I have just now started driving it with the top and windows up, thus why it's noticeable. It's not loud enough to give the sensation something is "wrong", thus I thought it might just be the normal sound print of a C-5. I will try to get a useable video and post. Tks
My thoughts as well. Could be an alternator bearing or a pulley. Then tension pulley for the belt can quite easily go bad. Common issue. Very easy to check. Use a 15mm socket on your ratchet and remove belt tension then slip your belt off. See if the tension pulley is free wheeling. If you can easily spin it with your fingers, then its bad. There should be a very slight resistance to your attempt to spin it. It should feel tight. It's just the opposite of what you'd expect. Replacement part for that pulley is probably less than $20. GL and keep us updated.
You can remove the main serpentine belt and see if something driven is causing the issue. Take it off and see if the noise goes away. It wont hurt anything to run it without a belt for a few minutes.
If the noise goes away, you will know its something driven. If it doesn't, it could be intake manifold/throttle body oriented and you can work in that direction.
I just finished doing more homework. It seems to be coming from the alternator and gets quieter as it warms up. More of a whine than a whistle. I will watch it for a while and make sure it doesn't get worse...voltage is good. Thanks to everyone for their help
