1) The "demon key" really is incredible -- I'm 6'4, 250lbs, go to the gym regularly, and I cannot budge it. I tried Patches' screwdriver method and this only succeeded in *breaking off* the lip of the key. The "core" of the key remains and I have enough to grip it north-south with an adjustable wrench. Would WD-40 or oil help to dislodge the @#$%* in any way? Again, I am truly astounded how difficult it is to remove this thing.
2) On disconnecting the little panel with the traction control switch, etc. -- what is the method for removing the connector for the passenger airbag indicator? It's hardwired at the panel end, with a large middle plug (the thing with the clip-on bit); there's a gray thingy on the panel-facing side of this plug and and a white one at the other. Neither shows any willingness to disconnect. (The grayish one looks like it ought to, with the little tabs and all, but positively does not cooperate.)
I am at the point where I could *maybe* get the shifter out of there with much awkwardness, without actually taking out the center console and dashboard trim, but that'd be more of a last resort if the demon key proves to be entirely immovable. Grrr. I hadn't plannet to go with an aftermarket ****, yet...

Use some kind of Super Penetrator spray or WD-40...soak it well. Mine was very difficult, but that certainly loosened it up.

I would strongly suggest that you go to http://www.vetteessentials.com and look at the instructions for either shift **** replacement or aluminum bezels install...the detail of the removal technique for each of the plugs is great.

That is certainly a fallback position. You may find that after all your hard work, the stock **** will rattle. Now is a good time to purchase a nice after-market ****.
Good luck...I'm only 5'6" 150 lbs, and I was able to wrestle mine off after about 40 minutes.
Don't fret, upon first try of removing the key using Patches method, I also broke off the little lip on the key. I just tightened the Vicegrips and reclamped. Next try prying the key popped out. Just make sure that the vicegrips are as tight as you can get them. Enjoy your new Hurst!

Ahhh - the airbag light's plug was one of those "easy to do if you are determined you're doing the right thing" deals, which the Vette Essentials docs cleared up perfectly. I'm now that much closer to success. :)
Purchased some WD-40 and applied liberally around the demon key. If still no luck in the morning I shall acquire locking vice-grips, rather than trying to He-Man it with a crescent.
I wonder -- Did Chevy engineer the demon key for the specific purpose of safeguarding the shift **** at auto shows? It seems cruel to subject the rest of us to it...
I installed my Hurst this weekend...yes both the airbag wiring harness and the demon key are a royal PITA. Glad you figured out the wires, try this for the demon key:
Using lock-grip plyers (a must) lock onto it (left and right if possible) and as you pull up on the plyers give them a couple of taps with the hammer. The plyers have a sort of "shoulder" where it hinges, it is there that it sticks out and is easiest to hit.
I tried the "prying method" to no avail :mad .
2 taps with the hammer and demon key was in hand. :D
Have fun with the Hurst...I've still got the stock ****...no rattle.
Check out a Vette Essentials shift boot to go with it...completes the look.
sk5t: I feel your pain. I have been waiting to install my Hurst for months now, while waiting for the Billet **** which arrived today. Jumped right in at 4:00. It's 11 now and the demon key is still in there. I wore the thing down until it was even with the shifter, nothing left to grab onto. Even tried to drill it out, but no luck. Then tried to screw a bolt into it. It was working great until it broke off. That's when I gave up for the night.
Re: Help - Hurst install is killling me (6spdNavy99)
I had just about given up myself, but the difference for me was the Super Penetrating Spray soaking. After that, it was just a matter of locking the vice grips (left-right), and firmly, but slowly pulling up on the key. Without locking pliers, there is no way to remove a stubborn DK.
Re: Help - Hurst install is killling me (chuckster)
That probably IS the ultimate key remover! Did people forget the TWO screwdiver method? Mine came off in seconds!
FYI: Using two screwdrivers, place a screwdiver under each tab (on the sides) then push both screwdriver handles down together (like the handled wine corkscrew puller). You may want to place a small towel over the key while you're doing this to prevent the key from "shooting" up - this wasn't an issue for me but I can see how weaker screwdrivers could cause this.
I think the 2-screwdriver method would have worked at the outset, before I broke off the screwdriver-friendly tabs individually...
The good news is that I finally got the shifter installed tonight by drilling a pilot hole into the demon key, put in a self-tapping screw with 5 or 6 twists, grabbed the screw's head with a pair of LARGE vise-grips, and hammered it out (about fifteen medium-heavy blows). I'll take 'er for a spin in the morning, I think... oh, the MGW Gripper **** is indeed a great complement to the setup.
Guys...forget all this north to south crap. Use a strong flat head screw driver and pry it against the shift ****. The **** will not be damaged. Leverage is the key.
In all fairness to the others on this forum, some demon keys are just that, demons, and will not just pop out as yours did. Many have tried the two screwdriver technique, and many have failed.
On the other hand, some demon keys are just not set as hard as others. Be thankful that yours was one of the latter.
For reference, mine was a true demon, and my first attempts included your 2 screwdriver technique. Didn't work for me, but eventually some Super Penetrating Spray and vice grips did the trick.
This is how I did one. Take shifter out of car with the boot and **** on it. Place vice grips on Demon Key. Take a thin but stronge metal bar and slid it through the mouth of the vicegrips. Sit down. Hold onto metal bar with both hands, and plce both feet at base of the shift. Now you are only a little leg press apart. Should only take a few moments this way. Use care, because you are pulling towards yourself when it comes off....
Hey guys I pull alot ot the keys out there is only one method that I use.
Med, size vise grips clamped hard and a hammer tapping the shoulder of the grips upward. it has never failed me and I haven't hit my self in the head eather.:)
If you pry up with the **** you will break down the foam and if you use break free lub it will eventualy get into the leather and ruin it as well.
I pulled two keys last night and no problem, just tap it out on the shoulder of the vise grips.
Just make sure you have clamped very tight.
Gah, Finally got that Demon key out myself. Broke one of the "wings" trying to pry it, tried the "Vicegrips and screwdriver with wood fulcrum" method to no avail. Put some 3-in-1 oil and let it sit for about 4 hours, came back with a less flexible screwdriver and tried again.
POP, thought the vicegrips had come loose when they flew off into the footwell, and then I saw that glorious hole where the Demon Key used to be. 2 minutes later, my MGW shift **** is in place. Feels MUCH better.
After the fight with the Demon Key, I'm wondering if Holy Water would have been quicker ... :reddevil
- drill pilot hole
- self-tapping sheetmetal screw
- massive vice-grips clamped onto screw's head
- 10-15 good strikes with a fullsize claw hammer
It's hard to describe how satisfying it was to have removed that horrible, horrible key. I really thought I would have to resort to shifter decapitation-by-hacksaw.
That was going to be my next step, if I wound up without enough "key" for the vicegrips to bite into. I don't think I fought it quite as long as you, but I definitely understand the satisfaction in getting that demonic piece of metal out of the shifter.
May that be the most difficult operation we ever have to perform on our Vettes!
