My 2002 z06 is popping out of 6th with acceleration and is difficult to get into first sometimes. I figured I would try the shifter alignment and replace the trans fluid.
The car has a c6 shifter ****. So I've torn the whole center console out only to find that there isn't a shifter alignment pin. Is this how the c6 shifter usually comes (I'm not sure if the **** is c6 or the whole shifter)? It looks just like the c5 version but completely lacks the pin and pin guide that is normally present on the front of the shifter. I've got the hole that the pin should fit into.
What's the best way to proceed? There doesn't seem to be a way to align the shifter with no pin or guide channel.
I usually use the shank end of a drill bit. There are TWO rubber bushings where the shifter mounts to the Torque Tube. Sometimes they get deteriorated and that can cause a lot of shift box lost motion (movement) which can cause what you are experiencing. When you shift, the lower shift box and the shifter top plate SHOULD NOT MOVE OR FLEX!!
The ZO6 shifter had solid aluminum bushings from the factory.

Shift forks don't get BENT easily. What usually goes wrong is the PLASTIC PADS on the tips of the forks wear or break and the shift fork cant fully engage the gear.
Here is what's inside your trans. You can see the pad and forks. Rick Kim has up-graded the pads to BRASS PADS:
