Default Shifter adjustment advice

My 2002 z06 is popping out of 6th with acceleration and is difficult to get into first sometimes. I figured I would try the shifter alignment and replace the trans fluid.

The car has a c6 shifter ****. So I've torn the whole center console out only to find that there isn't a shifter alignment pin. Is this how the c6 shifter usually comes (I'm not sure if the **** is c6 or the whole shifter)? It looks just like the c5 version but completely lacks the pin and pin guide that is normally present on the front of the shifter. I've got the hole that the pin should fit into.

What's the best way to proceed? There doesn't seem to be a way to align the shifter with no pin or guide channel.

Used a similar sized allen wrench instead. Seemed to help a bit, hopefully a trans fluid change will as well.

I usually use the shank end of a drill bit. There are TWO rubber bushings where the shifter mounts to the Torque Tube. Sometimes they get deteriorated and that can cause a lot of shift box lost motion (movement) which can cause what you are experiencing. When you shift, the lower shift box and the shifter top plate SHOULD NOT MOVE OR FLEX!!

The ZO6 shifter had solid aluminum bushings from the factory.

Forget the pin. Just adjust it until the shifter returns to the center position with the hole aligned as best as possible.

Already has the aluminum bushings. Made sure everything was tight and put it all back together.

Seemed to help a bit, but it still pops out of gear. There is no movement of the shifter base when shifting that I can tell.

I plan on changing the trans fluid this weekend. We'll see if that helps any.

Always been internal issue from the Vettes I have had in the past that popped out of any gears.

From what I've seen over the years....... Broken/bent/damaged shift fork and/or broken/damaged keys.

That's what I'm afraid of. This will probably help a little bit until I can get if fixed properly.

Shift forks don't get BENT easily. What usually goes wrong is the PLASTIC PADS on the tips of the forks wear or break and the shift fork cant fully engage the gear.

Here is what's inside your trans. You can see the pad and forks. Rick Kim has up-graded the pads to BRASS PADS:
