After a couple of scrapes, (minor ones thankfully) I decided to make my own front frame savers. They are basically 2 strips of a very tough and slippery plastic called UHMW which stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight. They are just screwed on to the front of each rail for about 7" with set head stainless screws (6mm). I want to post pics but am clueless as how to do so. If anyone is intrested please let me know how to get the pics on my thread and I will update.
I have e-mailed the pics to another member willing to help also. Thanks guys!! I made this my self and this material is what we use where I work to provide a wearing surface for conveyor sytems. It uis super tough stuff. :smash:
Interesting....I am having some bushing's CnCed right now that we are making out of UHMW. That is some tuff stuff. It should hold up well. I had a matierals engineer tell me it hold together a lot better than delrin (which is pretty strong to begin with).
Thanks for the replies guys. As for where it can be bought...I will, when I return to work Mon. update this thread with some company names and locations on where to buy it. We purchase it in all shapes and sizes ranging from 3" thick blocks of it to 4x8 sheets of it only 5-6mm thick. Delrin is also a very sturdy plastic but is much harder than this and would tend to chip off on impact. I also think that Andy's are great, but for a do it yourself project this one turned out pretty good!
Re: My own front frame savers...... (sweetcharity)
Pegasus Racing Supply carries this stuff in various shapes for purposes like this - it's excellent material, perfect for the application.
As for those of you running Andy's Frame Savers, why not do both? They don't interfere with each other any. It can't hurt, I already have the A&A stuff, and will be doing this.
Jerry, UHMW plastic is available at most woodworking stores or in catalogs; it's used a lot in making jigs. I've only seen it in white from those sources.
Re: My own front frame savers...... (Old Rotor Head)
If it is really tough, do you have to buy it in specific shapes or is there some way to cut it to what you want.
I also have Andy's Frame Savers and they work great. It seems that this stuff could probably be used similarly to Andy's Rocker Rails too, though again, his work really well.
Hmmm....Andy's framesavers cost virtually nothing (it is a $50,000 car, or close to, right?), are probably one of the cheapest mods we've seen where we don't get charged "Vette prices", and certainly work better than any other alternative out-there...right?
Aside from prices that range near the "he just makes them as a favor" range, prompt delivery and friendly service...
....why would anyone bother with anything else? :) :yesnod:
I suppose you would bother with anything else if you were a do it your selfer and had a good idea that cost you maybe 5-8$ in materials and about 30 minutes mfr. time and about 20 minute install.....why not! This material is tough but can easily be cut with a sawzall, band say and even ground to any specific shape. If you were making your own basically all you need is a 1 1/4" piece of flat bar and split it down the middle, then round the ends a bit and drill and chamfer them. you only need to drill one hole in each side of your rails (4.5mm) as the lower hole is already there. Then run a 6mm x1.0 pitch tap in there and screw em on. FYI mine got tested yesterday and worked perfectly and there was virtually no abrasion to the UHMW.
I just Googled uhmw, and hey, this stuff comes as adhesive tape, too. I have Andy's frame savers, but this sounds like a good way to further protect the rails, especially after they've been repainted. I wonder if Home Depot sells the tape - guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.
