Default Help please!! Ignition switch problem!

Okay guys for the past few days I was busting my butt trying to find out why my c5 z06 would not start. All gagues would work fine but when I would turn the key to fire it up I would get nothing. No click no sound at all. After researching I was sure it was my starter that went out, so I got the car on jack stands and did all the labor it was a pita to do. Finally after several hours I removed the old starter, and got a new one at my local auto parts store. Finally after all work is done I get ready for action, hop inside and turn key and the same exact thing. I get nothing!! I was so frustrated, back to resesrching... I noticed I had code 40bcm b2723 which was a ignition code, so I was about to get started on the ignition switch repair and right before I remove the ignition switch I notice a wire that looks to have been torn (pictures below) so I stop there and for the heck if it I touch them together with the battery connected and turn the key to fire it up and VROOOM! Fires right up. So I am thinking that right there was my issue. Now is there a way I can repair that or purchase a replacement wire without having to purchase the whole switch??? Please help me out guys

Extra information, I was getting the security light issue but figured it would go away so I am thinking this wire has something to do with the key or simething . I am sure that wire is my problem.

That SENSOR is part of the Ignition Key CYLINDER.. You can not purchase the sensor separately.

If you want to replace it, you have to purchase a complete new Key Cylinder and then have a LOCK SMITH rekey that cylinder to your OEM Key.

If it were me, I would take the sensor apart and just fix the wire.

I agree with Bill Curlee, you should be able to strip the black outer jacket of the cable and solder the wires together, strip the cable high enough to place a heat shrink tube over the solder connection. My 2 cents.

The one in the pic above is missing one of the roller assemblies that wipe over the pellet on your key to read the resistor value for the VATS function.

You may be able to repair the wire once you remove the cap shown.

Another alternative is to do a VATS bypass by obtaining a precision resistor the same value of the pellet on your key and soldering the resistor to the two wires. Not something I would do to my car but others have done so.

Here is a table of the 15 possible resistor values for the C5:

If you do chose to bypass VATS you need to measure the resistance of the pellet using a multi meter. Find the matching entry in the table and then obtain a resistor within the range shown for your key. Then solder the resistor between the ends of the two wires.

Big down side of this solution is that any screw driver will start your car. Key unnecessary.....

Fixed! Thank you for the advice. Actually had to kind of crack the plastic open to free up more wire. Then I stripped it and soldered em together. Security light went away, and fired right up. Finally got to drive her!

Did exactly as you mentioned. Fired right up and no more security light! Thank you!

Happy that OP fixed the problem. But wondering, what would cause this wire to break? Would turning the key on and off cause enough flex in the wire to ultimately cause the break?

Default VATS sensor replace and fixed it.

The picture showing the VATS sensor was perfect. Had intermittent non-starts, and security light on constant and remote start no security light and started fine. The light on said somethings wrong. Tested the security relay in the passenger kick panel. Its fine. Car starts most of the time. Somehow knew the sensor in the ignition cylinder was the issue. The image in this tread told me that sensor could be removed simply pry off the silver cap we small flat blade when I did, I saw the problem. Have a look at this image.

Notice the sensor sticking up out of the slot. No wonder i had issues.

So I purchased a used lock cylinder...cheapest I could find, and tested.

First disconnected the sensor from the circuit under the dash. Connected the new one to the circuit, and put one of my keys in the sensor. I had not yet put the new sensor in, or taken the old one out. Then out my other key in the current ignition switch in my dash. Started it. Security light went off. Whalla, the issue is that little sensor at the head of the ignition switch. Now I pulled the bezel off, and removed the sensor off my current ignition cylinder. Same procedure as the new one. Simply pry off with a small screwdriver. Then without taking out the starter switch, but just taking the lock cylinder out by putting my key in depressing the button in a little hole and turning the ignition and pulling the lock cylinder out now I put the new silver sensor circuit on my lock cylinder and bent the metal tabs back in place to lock the sensor to the lock cylinder. Put my old key in, turned it, vroom, it started and the security light when off. Whalla. Put the bezel back on and out the kick panel back in place and it works perfectly. As you can see from the image I attached, the sensor was broken. Thank you all for the images and description of how to do the steps to get this done. Was way easier than removing the ignition switch and and putting in the new lock cylinder and having to rekey to my original key.
