Default Checking Trans fluid, wow do I feel STUPID!

So I have read the many different post on how to check and change trans fluid on a C5. The other day in nice weather I raised car, started it up, had it reach 110 deg for the trans temp, shifted thru all the gears holding for 5 sec in each gear before returning to park, I then went under car opened trans drain plug with car still running and had minimal fluid loss. So thinking that's good I got up reached inside car and shut off, as I was turning the key off I realized I had forgotten to put the drain plug back in, thank fully I had a drain pan under trans, felt like such an azz! Every thread I read says in big bold print not to shut motor off with plug out!

So now my question, can I just re-add trans fluid and be done? About how many quarts will it take? I'm guessing 4+? Also have a place in town that sells MAG1 Synthetic DEX III can I use this just to top off the fluid that I lost?

Any help much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Yes you can. Just follow the procedure to be sure it is full. I always double check after warm up to make sure it is just trying to flow out of the fill plug before I put the plug in for the last time.

I have done similar things before. We are just humans and not perfect.

Just fill the pan till it runs back out the fill plug then start the engine and go through the refill procedure for warm up. I think about three or four quarts is about right. I would get 6 quarts to be sure.

I doubt it dumped more than a quart or 2. The only time I have found cycling through the gears after having the pan off was required is after a rebuild since that procedure is required to re-fill all of the passages. But the passageways and clutches and such really don't drain when just shut-down. Only the torque converter seems to drain a bit.

Thanks for your reply! I Noticed when re filling the trans it only took about 1.5 quarts, also this was after checking 4 times. I would shut motor off to keep temp between 122-136 then start back up remove plug
and try to add more fluid but it would always start coming back out. So
1.5 qts was all it took.

THANKS!

Reminds me of an incident here at work. One of the old timers, claims he never screwed anything thing up in his almost 40 yrs of service. We called him "Peter Perfect" I caught him one day banging on a newly installed Digital Instrument Recorder that replaced a mechanical recorder, on the Control Panel . Told him you can bang all you want, that digital point will not move.

I only read a sentence or two in the OPs post and I KNEW exactly what was coming!

Being a Sub Sailor I see more than my fair share of KNOW IT ALLS. We had one young Auxiliary Men who was one of the chosen few.

We collect POOP in a sanitary tanks and when the tank is full we BLOW it to the sea. During that process when the tank is being blown, it is pressurized and signs are hung on the ball valve operator handle "DANGER BLOWING SANITARY TANKS."
If you operate the ball valve you blow what ever is in the tank and bowl back on you!

Petty Officer (MM3 BARR) was drunk after a hard night of partying during Liberty. He went into the stall to take a leak and several people reminded him the we were blowing sanitaries.

Direct QUOTE From MM3 BARR " I'm an A GANGER, I have NEVER blown ******** on my self. "

Very shortly after that statement,,,, WHAM! He pulled the lever and so much air came out that he DROPPED the handle and it went full open. I have NEVER seen so much tank waste in one stall in my entire Navy Career! It was everywhere! WHEW!
