Default Security Light

OK next on the very long list....
Sometimes when I'm just driving along in Cruise control, the sucurity light comes on and stays on until I turn the car off and restart it.

Everything seems normal, no blinking lights or alarms or Horns.
Any Ideas? I was thinking mabe the key is loose and when I hit a bump it slides out a bit?

Thanks

Tony

1) Clean your keys and especially around the resistor chip. Sometimes if they're dirty they can cause your symptoms. I believe you can use an electrical contact cleaner to clean out the ignition switch, but I'd wait for Bill Curlee to chime in on that.

2) Try your spare key for a few weeks and see if you still have the issue. This should rule out whether it's your key or your ignition switch.

If those fail then it's possible your ignition switch is going bad. Do a google search for "C5 Corvette Security Light" and search through the various threads. There may be some other pointers I missed.

You also might want to try to use just the ignition key and not a heavy key chain. Worked for me.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, I have two sets of keys on the same keychain, one for my blaser and one for the vette.

Thanks

When you lose VATS circuit continuity AFTER the engine cranks and runs,,, the SECURITY light will do what yours is doing!

Something in the VATS circuit is starting to fail. Fix it now or tow it later!!

If the key is worn and you have a good backup key I would get a new key cut from the backup and ditch the worn one. If you do not have a good backup key you might want to bite the bullet and have a Stealership cut you a new one based on VIN. Not sure if a local locksmith can get the key info based on VIN but worth a couple calls to check. They will be less expensive than the Stealership....
Thanks again for the Help, I just had a new key made for about $20, I purchased a blank from Ecklers Corvette and had it cut at ACE hardware, Maybe by a new ignition switch from Ecklers, thaks again for your rapid response and awsome help 8VETTE7 and Bill Curlee and others

ABSOFRIGGENLOOTLY!!!!!!!!!!

If you order an IGNITION SWITCH,,, this is what you will get:

It WILL NOT come with a key cylinder!!!!

The part you need is the IGNITION KEY CYLINDER. The cylinder has the KEY VATS SENSOR on it.

The new cylinder will come with its own KEY. You will need to take the key cylinder to a LOCK SMITH and have him/her re-pin the new cylinder to work with your old key.

Like 8VETTE7 recommended, I would also replace the ignition switch as it is a KNOWN troubled part!

LOL!! YES! There are parts on a C5 that last a LONG time and hardly ever break..

Then there are a BIG LIST of parts that are listed as **** POOR DESIGN FAILURE RELATED PARTS.
