I just got back from a long trip in Z06 and I'm thinking of removing the Hurst shifter. The shifter has been in for about 6 weeks and I guess its worn-in now and it started making a bunch of noise. Under light load the thing rattles like a rattlesnake. It also rattles enough while cruising that I kept my hand on it most of the trip.
I love the way it shifts but the Z06 is too nice a car to have a shifter that sounds like it belongs in a Hugo.
Many of us have had similiar noise issues with the Hurst (and other aftermarket shifters as well). I finally cured all the rattles/buzzing by finding a **** that must match the natural harmonics of the Hurst and tamed it. I bought the MGW Gripper, looks and feels great, cost $45 ($52 shipped) and slienced the Hurst. Other's have had success with other ****'s.
One way to test this is remove what ever **** you currently have installed, I even removed the boot and took the car for a drive. The Hurst didn't make a sound. I reinstalled the OEM (later a momo) and both times the rattles/buzzes returned. Confirmed it really wasn't the Hurst but some combination of the **** and shifter. You'll notice that many folks with a quiet Hurst have some sort of aftermarket ****.
No one know's why but some ****'s just don't get along with the Hurst.
Thanks for responses. I'll dig into it this weekend, make sure everything is tight and try troubleshooting the **** issue. I'm currently using the stock **** so I may have to look to the aftermarket. It's sure funny that Hurst would make a shifter that doesn't work with stock equipment.
Anyway, I'll try your ideas. I really want this to work, I love the way it shifts!
I helped my friend install his Hurst Shifter and we put sticky wheel weights on the base of the shifter..... that cured his rattle.........we got the wheel weights from Discount Tire Co. so if there is one near you try and get them.
Good idea! The reason some ***** will take away the rattle is because of the wieght. A heavier **** will more that likely take away your problem (the same way keeping your hand on it did). The wheel wieght thing never occured to me...that is cool.
Mined rattled like a biiiiitch. Momo ***** didn't help the wheel weight thing didn't work either. The MGW got rid of 95% of the rattle. I really think the specs for the pivot assembly suck and the **** thing just alters the mess enough to stop most of the rattle. Hurst themselves said to me via email that is was normal and I responded saying I don't believe that and no further response from them, go figure.
oooohh! Alarm bells are ringing in my head. I have the shifter here waiting for my install. I am no mechanic by any means but figured I would give it a go with the great install/slide guide (can't remember origin, you Patches?) and an old Corvette Fever install/pic guide. This sounds less like an installer problem but a product problem. I want to use my stock shifter ****, what up with that?
Anyone out there that did use the stock **** with no problems? How many miles since install? Did you do it or pay for installation?
My car will go into the Vette Doctors next month and I am thinking maybe I should let them do it. I would love to save the install money though. I could always install and then try all this other jazz with weights, different *****, etc.. I am just thinking if a tuner intalls these things they would just do it and not ask me if I want to add weights or a new **** because it will rattle like hell in about 2 months?
Does any of that make sense?
I should change my forum name to "paranoid". Just trying to psych myself up for this.
The installation seems easy enough that if you have a rattle develop you can either play with it or re-install the stock shifter. I would install it yourself and save the $$$.
I am concerned also. I just ordered a Hurst last night.
The install is easy. It seems all the aftermarket shifters are prone to some vibration that usually can be cured by an aftermarket ****. I can install one start to finish in about 45 minutes, without rushing.
Does anyone know if the Kirban vibrates? I've driven a couple of cars with that shifter, and like it. They have had no vibration either.

You can install the Hurst in about an hour, the hardest part is getting the dam **** pin aka demon key out. It's really very easy and you get a chance to tidy things up. I'd install the Hurst and before installing what ever **** you have take it for a test drive (you can check that you have all 6 forward gears and reverse) if it's tight and rattle free you'll know that any future noise issues eminate from the ****/shifter combination. And go from there.
TIP: To make it easier to remove the **** pin soak it down with WD-40 and use a small vice grips and rock it side to side while pulling straight up. Also cover instrument panel with towels and if you have a glass top remove it. That way if you have to really tug on the pin and it comes loose and the vice grips goes ballastic you don't want to cause any interior damage.

Ops just noticed you have a Z06 so ignore the glass top tip.
What Tom said. Easy except for the demon key. I have the stock boot and shifter **** (it did break my heart putting that damn key back in place) and I have no rattle problems. I put this in about 2k miles ago and have a couple of road course days on it with no noise or other problems. I kept the factory spring setting, but backed it off about a turn. I think it is a bit clunky still (although actually getting better) but I like it a lot better than stock.
This is a DIY mod don't spend the $$ to have someone do it. The rattle if you have one is worth it. Mine rattles but only at WOT and above about 4K RPM
Mine rattled in my 93 Cobra Mustang. It is just a fact of life that when you get rid of the rubber isolators and firm things up, any vibration in the driveline is going to be more easily transmitted to the shifter ****.
Trying a new **** my help. Weights may help. Some people get lucky and don't have enough vibration to hear...
I've had my hurst for about 1,000 miles now with the stock shift ****, hurst factory settings and no rattles. It did rattle the first time it was driven after the install but went away on its own and hasn't rattled since. Ken King, Lambinator and myself all had a hand in the install. I had bought an MGW **** due to all the posts about the rattle but I guess I'll just keep it as a back up.
