I don't know yet... car has steering wheel columb lock code come up after gm recall install and the lmc5 by- pass. Was told corrosion on the circuit board might be the cause.
Thanks... 8vette7... your help and concern is greatly appreicated. Yes, there has been moisture in the footwell through the yrs. Since the car dose remain outside. At this time, i have yet to visually inspect the inside of the box. When time permits, i will do this, along with checking other channels of possibilities... poor grnds, etc. Thanks again for your help ! Always... Ray C.

If that's your only symptom I'd check to make sure you battery is fully charged/good and if you continue to experience the pull key message you may need to contact richard at compliance parts and do the brown wire mod.
I would also pull and post the codes as suggested to see if there's anything else wrong.
FYI a low battery will cause all sorts of issues/codes.
you might need your utters cleaned... well, not YOURS but your cars.
Thanks, everyone... for the roadmap to resolve... including Rich at Compliance... my next step is to pull codes and clean all grounds. Battery is fine. I would like, and have never found actual pics of all the grounding points... froggy on utube for some but not all... wish he had kept going ! Thanks everyone, i'll keep in touch...

Some years ago, I purchased a brand new Die Hard platinum battery.
Had many small issues and finally swapped for another brand new Die Hard battery. The brand new battery got rid of MANY issues....headlight switch, automatic door locks, items on dash resetting etc. all gone.
I pulled codes and got: 10-PCM P1571 H P1626 H 40-BCM B 0432 HC B 0502 HC B 0503 H B 0507 H B 0508 H B 2483 H B 2587 H B 2588 H B 2593 H U 1096 H I see that codes B 2587 ; 2588 ; 2593 pertain to : column lock/unlock drive A & B. Would these codes be the culprit ? I guess I should start cleaning ground pts. Would like to know where these circuits are located ? Well I'm going to clean as many grounds as I can fined, and see what happens !! Continued help would be greatly appreciated ! THANKS, Ray C.
Update from rayco... I just cleaned ground connections G 101 & 102.. they didn't seem to bad... and the column lock code hasn't come up yet... but only time will tell, because it's so random. Also, interestingly enough, I examined the BCM box and found a burned out connection in the circuitry near the green plug along with maybe another one elsewhere, I wish I could put the PICS. of it on the site, but I'm not to computer savy ... but maybe I can get a friend to help with that, also , I saw no signs of oxidation on the circuit board. IF a tech. could see the locations of the burned circuits, could he tell what components they would affect ? Also how do I get to the ground pts. at the door pillars ? THANKS... Ray C

You can get to the door pillar grounds by gently pulling up the plastic pieces that are on the door sill. They are simply clipped in. The front kick plate is attached to this piece and can all be unsnapped. I recently did this as well on a 97. Should not be a problem. You will see the grounds on the door pillars.
THANKS... Popshumphry... and 8vette7... I got to the ground pts. at the door pillars but need a small 1/4" swivel socket the right size, and maybe trim some plastic to get at the bolt. Anyway, I cleared all the codes and took the car for a couple of short rides and only one code reappears : 10 PCM P1571... which is the TRACTION CONTROL REQUEST CIRCUIT ... and I think that ground is at the A pillar drivers side... along with column lock circuit... therefore, I will press on to clean those ground pts. ! That burned circuit on the BCM does puzzle me, in regards to what it goes too. I'd like to show pics. of it, to see if someone can help me on that, when I learn how. Well, I feel good about today, thanks to forum friends ! I'll keep you posted on my progress... THANKS AGAIN... Ray C

It is my understanding, that the P1571 code will always be on. It is on my 97. You can clear it and it will come back. At some point someone told me that on the 97 you can block this code with a computer but that it is just unnecessary. At least that is my understanding that is peculiar to the 97. I will let others confirm this and I will double check.
I'm back to initial problems... pull key and wait ; and steering wheel columb lock... with a burned circuit on the BCM, I know it needs to be replaced. GM said the component is discontinued, as I have heard before, therefore, does anyone have the best direction to offer me ? help is greatly appreciated ! THANKS... Ray C.
There are 3 'types" of things that need to be programmed into a replaced BCM:
1) VATS key code and PCM password sync: The key-ON and Off sequence in the factory service manual does this. All you need is the key and 30 minutes of your time. Car won't run unless you do this. Often called the "PCM-BCM Relearn" procedure.
2) RPO coding : Tells the BCM what your VIN is, and options your car has, like if it is a convertible, automatic, auto-climate control, fog lights...You need a Tech-2 to do this, but your car can be driven even if the RPO codes are not set correctly. I am not sure the BCM really "cares" what VIN is programmed into it.
3) SDM (airbag control module) serial number : The BCM has a memory "slot" for the serial number of the SDM. Whenever the car is started, the SDM checks if the serial number stored in the BCM matches its own (SDM) serial number. If it doesn't, the airbag light stays ON, the airbags are disabled, and the SDM sets a DTC B1001 ("Configuration Error"). You can reset this thru the DIC, turning off the Airbag warning light and enabling the airbags, so you can drive the car with functional airbags, but you have to do this everytime you start the car. To program the correct SDM serial number into the BCM, a Tech-2 AND a connection to the GM Service computer is needed. Now for worse news, ONLY brand-new, never-been-programmed BCMs allow the SDM serial number to be written into it. What that means, is that a used BCM can never be reprogrammed for this, and new BCMs are becoming scarce, as the part is obsolete. It is not known if "rebuilt" BCMs can be programmed for this (meaning that the rebuilding vendor can reset the BCM to the virgin state).
