I'm pretty sure either my throw out bearing or pilot bearing is going out on my 99 6sp.vert. It makes a grinding noise only when I push down the clutch pedal. The guy I bought it from said that the clutch had just been replaced but had no receipt, so who knows if it actually was replaced. Anyways, can either of these two bearings be replaced without dropping the whole torque tube and trans? And if I do have to drop the whole thing, I would like to replace the entire clutch assembly. Another question is, is this a job that I can do fairly easy at home without a lift. Just on jackstands? I am fairly mechanically inclined. Thanks for any info....

You have to remove "so to speak" the differential/trans and Torque Tube to change either one. Horsepower TV had an episode that showed how to SLIDE the drivetrain back in a C5 and replace the throwout bearing and slave cylinder BUT,, it was just as much work.
To properly replace the pilot bearing (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) you must remove the drive train to get proper access and to get a slide hammer in and pop that sucker out..
I did mine on tall jack stands on the garage floor. It really isn't difficult. Just time consuming especially the first time you do it.
Now you have to decide on what clutch you are going to get!

Removal of the old bearing means not being tempted to try the old "pack-it-with-grease and smack it" technique. Use a slide hammer/puller.

DO NOT try to pack it with grease, there is a seal in the end of the crank that can be popped out and you will end up with a massive oil leak and ruin your clutch
