Yesterday I took my car in to get the plugs changed at a local garage. An hour and a half later I came and picked up my car from the garage and the mechanic told me that he had to buy a replacement spark plug wire because one of them broke off when he was trying to remove it from the old plug. Anyways during the whole day the car ran very smooth and felt much snappier. I was happy and pleased with my mild tuneup.
This morning when I was going to work I started off and I heard this loud tapping noise underneath the hood. I instantly stopped and shut the engine off. I then turned it back on and that dreadful noise was still there. I slowly crawled back to my garage and parked my car there. What would this problem be? The car has 55,000 miles on it and im the 3rd owner. I have never missed a shift at a high rpm so I dont think its a bent pushrod. Could this be a loose spark plug wire or a plug that isnt in all the way? I checked them just now and they seem pretty tight to me. :(

something could be arching on something.... or a plug could be loose and rattling around in the hole. I would pull them back off and re do them yourself, that way you know everything is right. Just my .02

make sure the ceramic isn't sliding in and out of the steel part of the plug, back in high school, my bros jeep had that happen to him, he of course made sure they were tight, which they were, but the ceramic was loose and moving in and out of the plug base by about 1/4 inch...just something to look at, very rare though.

Would it make that loud tapping noise though if this was the problem? And how come the car ran fine right after the plug installation? Sorry for all the questions, im just worried that its something real major. Hopefully its just a plug thats not in good enough.

Thanks for the info Bob, next time I will call him when I need service done. :) Anyways I just got back from the garage that is going to fix my car and what is wrong is that my car needs a new harmonic balancer. The balancer itself is 150 dollars and plus the labor. Whew I was sweating bullets there for awhile. I thought maybe it was going to something major like a broken cam or something. So I shouls have my car back by tomorrow afternoon. I am sure missing her already!
