Default Crank timing sprocket removal

Hello everyone, having problems with trying to remove the crank sprocket. I rented the pulley from autozone, but the bolt is to short and bottoms out before beginning to pull at all. I put the main bolt back in the crank, but then the tool is to short. Looking for possible ideas.

Auto zone offers 3 pulley pullers, the biggest one is way too big. I used one of the two smaller ones and possibly one of the studs included in my otc damper pulley. For reinstall I bought a foot of pvc that fit onto the lip of the crank sprocket, set a piece of 2 x 4 on top of the pvc and hammered on the 2 x 4 sitting on top of the pvc while standing the crank up.

You shouldn't push against the crank itself anyhow because you can damage the threads. I made a thick metal shim from round bar to push against but many use a socket, preferably an impact socket to bear against the crank and then let the puller bear against the socket.

Not sure how you plan to re-install, but don't use the "longer" bolt method that ls1howto.com uses, or you will likely be back asking how to fix the damaged crank snout.

Don't beat on the pulley with a hammer and don't use an impact wrench - it can cause serious damage to the crank bearings. Do use a spacer between the crank snout and puller tip. As said above a small socket works well as a spacer.

Guys, he's not talking about the crank pulley, he's talking about the crank sprocket that the chain wraps around. On second thought I think I put my old crank bolt back in the snout but didn't torque it down and used the 3 arm or 2 arm pulley to push against that while pulling the crank sprocket off. The crank snout is keyed for the crank sprocket. The official tool is a small fortune from kent moore on ebay if you want to give that a shot... Kent Moore J-41558.

I agree with the post above mine. I did the exact same thing. The only thing different was i applied heat to the old sprocket while pulling on it.

I got my pullers from Harbor Freight in a set of three for less than $20.00. Worked great. Also used one of them for removing the dampener.

An old trick for removing the timing chain sprocket on small blocks was to take a chisel and hitting it between the teeth splitting the sprocket. Then it pulls right off by hand.

I got it I borrowed a puller and it worked. The pullers from autozone and o'reilly's were either to small or to big. I don't know the size of this puller, but it worked perfect. I used a bolt from the power steering rack inside of the crank to have something for the puller to push on. Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas.

Whoops, my bad. I did buy the Kent-Moore tool for that and it was cheap off of flea-bay. Still in the drawer.
