According to the manual the first thing to check when your check engine light comes on is the gas cap. Mine would no longer get tight so I replaced it with a new one that does get tight but the engine light still stays on. Is there a time period that I must wait for the computer to figure out that it is now pressurized or could there be other problems? It is an 04 model with 22k miles.
To answer your question....Yes, it can take several key cycles for the light to turn off if the problem was the gas cap. Pulling codes will expedite the understanding of the cause. If you clear the codes it will also turn off the light so long as the condition isn't currently happening.
NOTE!!! When ever you manually clear any PCM DTC, you RESET your emissions READY status to NOT READY. It takes considerable driving time to get the EMISSIONS READY status to reset. That fact comes into play IF,,,,,, you have to pass an emissions test in the next couple of days.
I agree.. Pull and post all the DTCs that you have to get a better idea what is NOT HAPPY!
I had that happen to me 7-8 months ago and replaced the gas cap, had no codes, but the reset button cleared the message for me and it has not returned.
