I notice a squeaking noise coming from my ac. When the ac is running there is no noise, but as soon as I turn the ac off, the squeaking noise begins. Any ideas what it can be or if I have to change out the compressor that is working just fine?

A/C clutch bearing failure. Replace the A/C clutch on the front of the compressor.
When the A/C is off the pulley spins freely on a bearing. If the bearing goes bad it makes a noise. When the A/C is on and the compressor is in use the clutch engages and the pulley spins the compressor.
The part isn't that expensive and doesn't require much labor.
No! You don't have to take the freon (R 134a) out.
Call a mechanic.
I wanted to thank you for your help in your first post. I was not sure if I had to pull the compressor out or if I could change it on the car, that's why I was asking if I had to drain the Freon.
I always do all my own work on the car once I know what the issue is and use to be an aircraft mechanic so I don't need to "call a mechanic". I guess your second post was not as helpful, but thanks for the first post.

You can just remove the belts and swap out the clutch pulley.
I'm sorry if I seemed short but It is hard to know someones skill level. I don't want to get someone in over their head. It really isn't that hard if you see the part then I think you will know.
It will be the same process as most Chevy's of the era. I am on vacation and don't have my manuals handy for a step by step breakdown. You should be able to find video in this from YouTube.
I highly recommend the factory service manual if you plan on doing your own work. they are a little pricey but you can find good ones used.
